Police: Woman Charged With Attempted Murder After Hitting Teens

POSTED: 9:13 pm EST December 5, 2004

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- A St Augustine woman is charged with attempted murder after she allegedly ran down two brothers and tried to hit a third brother after a seemingly harmless incident with a golf ball Sunday afternoon.

According to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, Isiah Grayer, 14, and 16-year-old twins Justin and Jamel Marshman, were bouncing a golf ball in a parking lot on State Road 16 about 2:45 p.m. when it got away from them and hit an SUV owned by Kathy Allen, 47.

According to authorities, there were no damage to the Chevrolet Blazer, but the brothers went over to apologize, then turned to walk away.

According to witnesses, Allen started driving to the other side of the parking lot and accelerated towards the boys, driving over several curbs and through the landscaping to hit two of the boys and knocked down a light pole. Police said she then turned her SUV towards the third teenager, but the vehicle got stuck in drainage ditch and the third boy was able to run away.

Grayer was flown to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center, where he was reported in critical condition with head injuries. Justin Marshman is at Flagler Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Whitley was not injured.

Along with witness statements, investigators found acceleration marks on the road.

Allen was questioned, then arrested and charged with attempted murder. She'll appear before a St. Johns County judge Monday morning.

"It is okay to drive a bit "rushed" but people need to respect safe following distances and maintain distance/space "cushions"."

Well said, it seems people don't care. It is just common sense. You have to know if you take an M&M car, oh I mean a Geo metro and a Semi, drive them side by side at the same speed and stop them both the semi takes longer to stop. Though I am not perfect I am guilty of not following the 3sec rule to a tee, but I do like my "cushions".

There is no difference between waving around a loaded gun and driving drunk.

"I was so shocked I didn't even think to pull out my cell until the crazy ordeal was over."

I left a friends apartment the other night, pretty late, and as I was coming to my car, I saw an old 80s GMC van parked beside mine, and a few guys running really quick to get into their van. One of the guys was still partially hanging out the door as they peeled out in reverse, almost hitting another car, and they tore out of the complex with the side door still sliding back and forth, running over a curb and so forth. I was in such shock, I completely forgot to read their plates. I thought they were just some more typical drunk losers, but when I got to my car I saw that they were in the process of breaking into it as I was walking up. I've been angry at myself for not having the presence of mind to read their license plate, and my passenger door doesn't close properly any more. Grrrr.

That's rough.
I suppose it's better than showing up to watch your car drive away without you!
Hey, we could even look at it as better than showing up at the same time they were inside your vehicle....scary

Marshman, 16, spent a day in the hospital after being struck Sunday by a Chevrolet Blazer whose driver, authorities said, intentionally targeted the two when a golf ball bounced against her vehicle. A third brother was chased, authorities said, but was not struck.

"She got out of the car and smirked at us and smoked a cigarette," he said.

I got a feeling Racist bigoted [attempting] murdering *itch is a good way to describe this "woman".

Jamel Marshmen told First Coast News he started running towards Allen in a rage.

"My first mind, was I was going to knock her down and start stompin' her, but something came in my mind and stopped me. Somebody's face I knew back, way back, that was killed a few months ago.

He said the image in his mind of a female friend who died a violent death, suddenly made him see that if he attacked the SUV's driver, he would also go to jail, and then he couldn't help his injured brothers.

"It paused me and because she was a good friend of mine, and she helped me out a few times when I was in trouble and stuff, back when I was real young and in school," said Marshman.

"I didn't want that on my conscience, seeing my brothers in the hospital while I was in jail and stuff."

I'm glad he's got a conscience, this *itch should be put away for a long time.

I knew a guy in high school who had a box of roofing tacks under the rear bumper of his Corvette with a release inside the car. No, I don't know if he graduated from high school to prison.

>>I've encountered FReepers on some of the forums (libertarians?) who insist that no matter what, the car behind you has the right of way if they are going faster and they will insist that you can be ticketed for not moving out of their way (even if you are already speeding).<<

I've lived in several different States, and in most, it's the car with the damage on the front that gets the ticket.

"The people who tailgate me..."

I commute daily from Frederick, Md. to Montgomery Co., a rich suburb of Washington, D.C. I find that the most aggressive drivers in this area are young females (not teenagers) driving Hondas and Accuras. I've saved many a person a ticket because I drive 30 mph thru a little town that doesn't even have a stoplight, but 2 - 3 times a week has a radar trap. As soon aas I get pst the town, I am frequently passed on a double yellow line by the person I just saved. Sometimes wish I was a trooper in a unmarked car.

My brother was being tailgated in the rain on I-95 and there was a trashcan up ahead in his lane.

He swerved out of the way at the last second and the person behind him who was tailgating hit the trashcan at 75MPH.

That's one reason tailgating is a bad idea.

In those situations, I turn on the hazard lights. Who knows if it'll actually keep someone from crashing into me.

'I don't understand why this seems to be such a big deal to our politicians.'

Who does? It's gotta be some threat of being called racist, or insensitive. It is absolutely ridiculous to think that our elected officials would jeopardize the safety of Americans simply to avoid being called a racist by some racist, but I am afraid they would. Just look how Trent Lott fell on his sword at the mere suggestion of racism. These critters are scared to death of being perceived as being un-P.C.

I believe you are right. After watching the developements over the last couple of days, it looks like our asteemed congressmen are afraid to ruffle any feathers. Ann Coulter said it best when speaking of the current legislature, (and I am parasphrazing) "Look people we won! It is time to step forward and get some things done!"

I hate to see us lose one of the greatest opportunities that has come to the Republican party in a century, but it appears most of the leadership is afraid of their own shadow. It is time to be ruthless and stop sitting on our hands.

We need to fight the war at home as well as abroad. Not only against Terrorism but against the Socialist who threaten our American way of life.

Enviros, ACLU, France, PETA, the U.N., the likes of George Soros, Michael Moore, Hollywood in general, ABC, NBC, SeeBS, etc. the list goes on and on.

I would like to see a delegation from the Repubs in Washington hold a press conference with a delegation of Red Staters (who they say they represent) and answer a few questions. I doubt any of them have the cajones to look us in the eye and answer a few basic questions on the issues confronting the country in the near future.

You MUST pull over to the slow lane if there are cars in back of you who wish to pass.

Sure. I always do...unless there is a long line of traffic in front of me too. Still I'll get an a-hole behind me pushing and flashing. Where does he think he's going?

Anyway, back to the thread--I won't be surprised to hear that these boys weren't near as Innocent or polite and these initial reports try to make it seem.

Nothing excuses what this lady did.

My wife flipped the bird to some rednecks tailgaing her betwwen L'viile and Cincy. She learned a major leson. She did not have a cellphone and the creeps terrified her for miles until she could exit. Her life was truly put at risk over that gesture. Beware!

Flipping the bird is not advisable unless you are perfectly willing to stop and tell the person "f you" to their face. If you are not, move on and keep that finger secured.

Post 97: Reminds me of a George Carlin joke.

Which reminds me of a quip I heard last year in Boston from Sven, the driver of a tourist Duck Boat we rode in (yes, a Duck Boat. It was fun but I will never ride in one again, since one sank in the Baltimore Harbor).

Sven ran a red light and told the tourists not to worry. "Those traffic lights are mere suggestions."
