Pistol range seeks expansion

Burnsville Pistol Range owner Roger Hird is fired up about the possibility of doubling the size of his business.

Because of homeland security issues and a growing number of Minnesota gun permit holders in recent years, he and other shooting-range owners are seeing an increased demand for their facilities by law enforcement and community members alike.

As a result, Hird wants to expand the size of his indoor facility to include six rifle lanes in addition to the existing 12 available for pistol shooting. The $600,000 project also would expand a classroom to accommodate groups of 30 people rather than the current 10. On Monday, the Burnsville Planning Commission held a public hearing on Hird's expansion request and recommended the City Council approve the proposal at its Dec. 20 meeting.

"The problem that people run into is the availability of range space," Hird said. "We've seen a twofold increase in our customer base over the last several years. Sometimes the demand is so much that we don't have enough space and we have to turn people away."

I spent many a winter afternoon in Roger's bunker. The place was closed for a time because of a lack of interest. Glad to see that's changed some.

I have not been to a range in a long time. Not that I am not interested, but where I am there arent any ranges to go to. I would love to see one avaliable near my home.

I had my mod 22 Glock back from the gunsmith's and invited my insurance agent from Prior Lake to join me at Roger's for a few hours' shoot. After I instructed him on the logic of having the safety on the trigger tip, I turned the gun over and he loaded up.
I was saying something about the trigger being really light just as he brought the pistol down to eye level and POW, put a round into the ceiling.
Roger had been watching all this through the rear window and stepped out to remind the insurance man that the targets were down range, not overhead.

Sounds like a business opportunity to me.

Would you like the number to the NRA Range Development coordinator in your area?

This is very good news. A renewed interest in the shooting sports is exactly what this country needs right now. Badly.

Garrison wouldn't like BPR - the Ma Deuce in the lobby would give him hives...
