When Montag fails to show up for work, his fire chief, Beatty, pays a visit to his house. Beatty explains that it’s normal for a fireman to go through a phase of wondering what books have to offer, and he delivers a dizzying monologue explaining how books came to be banned in the first place. According to Beatty, special-interest groups and other “minorities” objected to books that offended them. Soon, books all began to look the same, as writers tried to avoid offending anybody. This was not enough, however, and society as a whole decided to simply burn books rather than permit conflicting opinions. Beatty tells Montag to take twenty-four hours or so to see if his stolen books contain anything worthwhile and then turn them in for incineration. Montag begins a long and frenzied night of reading.

Everybody thinks that only the ones who refuse to either receive or worship the mark of the beast will be the only ones to be publicly executed by guillotine...in the Last Days, all things considered sinful in the eyes of God will be legal (even gay sex between a 52 year old man and a 2 year old boy), while all things considered good in the eyes of God will be illegal, and all crimes in the NWO will carry an automatic penalty of death. So enjoy the things you do today, because possibly 4 years from now you could be put to death for those same things. Can you imagine being executed for hunting or fishing? It will happen. You will be executed for eating meat. Refusing to adapt to a strict vegan diet will be a capital offense. Practicing monogamous, marital, heterosexual sex will earn you a trip to the guillotine. Having a Bible in your possession will cost you your head. Using hate speech will at first result in your tongue being cut out by the jackboots before being led to the guillotine.
