A cutting costs about 10 cents, a finished plant as much as $15 in the United States. A similar plant in Mexico sells for $2 to $5.
''Just imagine how well we could do if we could sell these plants in the United States,'' Esquivel said as she strode through rows of fiery Freedom Reds, glorious Red Angels and speckled Gingerbells. ''The Americans don't have big plants like these here. They would love them.'' I bet most of the labor that cultivates them in the US is illegal alien Mexican labor. It's not like American jobs would be lost if the grown plants were allowed to be sold in the US. In fact by creating jobs in Mexico, it would help decrease the need for Mexicans to emigrate from Mexico.

Statement: "Mexico envies U.S. poinsettia industry"
Response: The Mexican government should not be concerned. Once this news is digested by our so called leadership, steps will be immediately taken to suppress our domestic industry. Thus, evidencing the truth of the statement; "in declining states the leadership intuitively choses the most harmful course of action..."-A Great Historian 1888

i'm not sure that poinsettas were exclusively "mexican".
they're native to the caribbean, also.

It's their plant? Did their ancestors find a scrawny-looking plant growing in the wild and improve it by cultivation until it was the attractive plant Poinsett noticed, or does Mother Nature deserve the credit? Did Poinsett take home a wild plant or a cultivar?
