I expect that the original blast was a suicide bomber, and a follow-on attack was made by rocket/mortar fire to inflict casualties on the emergency personnel.

I read an account of a chaplain on the scene who watched the mortars being 'walked in', each successive round coming closer and closer.

The roof is made of canvas. It's going to sag to the inside no matter what caused the explosion.

ABC radio news just reported a few minutes ago that it was a suicide bomber, not a rocket, that killed all these good men.

Report said the perp was 24-year old who had been 'employed' at the base for two months.

Investigators have found the perp's torso and fragments of a bomb belt, which they believe was brought into the facility in a backpack.

Terrorist Releases more Details about Mosul Attack

Source: Al-Ezah | 10:19:58 AM

One Terrorist is claiming to have gotten ahold of more information on the Mosul attack. He claims that the attack was carried out by a young martyr, approximately 24 years of age. This young man had worked in the Mosul base before and was able to gather intelligence about the base and important details regarding when and what would be the best target for an attack. The Terrorist then goes on to say that he is not positive, but he believes that the attack was more then likely carried out by using C4 Explosives attached to the marytr's body. As the young man entered the tent he set off the explosives.

MACHINE TRANSLATION

In information that came in some of the sites on the Internet Ansar al-Sunna Army declared while I mentioned that it is the clarification of an appendix that the champion martyr who executed Mosul operation he a young man from Mousel City sons aged 24 years it married a month ago approximately and it could work inside base of American Alghzlani in Mosul since about the two months and it was throughout this period supplying the army with information about the forces centralization sites inside the Al-Qaeda and the ammunition storage sites and other and the coordinates of those sites until their bombardment takes place and according to those information the bombardment of the base has taken place 48 time through these months as had a dangerous role in the guidance about the customers Walmtaounin with the occupation forces and the workers inside the base from workers and Iraqi contractors and Turks and Americans and others and that has facilitated the execution of the Allah's command in 37 of the traitors the customers inside this rule and the statement mentioned that the attack executor was making inside the restaurant and that it carried out the preparation of by the explosives himself and exploded himself in the lunch date totally while the soldiers lines were arriving at the restaurant to the eating this and the clarification has promised spreading videotape of the operation soon and on the other side the data have conflicted regarding the dead numbers then while the Ministry of Defence declares that

Others remember a probability that it plastic explosives with severe explosion and that their hiding is possible have been used in the attack in the clothes but it until with this proposition, the intensity of the explosion as came that needs a large amount of those plastic explosives and if it was proved a correctness that they are that first time approximately that this kind is used in them of the explosives in an operation in Iraq

Would the Marine have conducted his "Mercy Killing" if the wounded man had been a fellow Marine?

Killing someone who wants to kill you is normally considered self defense, not mercy.

So some homicidal maniac was just allowed to waltz into a US military mess hall. Lovely.

You again. Geez.

Yes, that's what our troops do. They just allow stuff to happen. Why don't you educate us, Great One, as to how you would have handled this situation?

And I'm sure in short order you'll have blamed this on Sec. Rumsfeld...

Now a reporter on the John Gambling radio show is saying that the suicide bomber used an explosive that was 'more easily concealed' than the usual stuff, apparently.

The Islamofascist website that is claiming responsibility reportedly says a video of the bombing will be 'released.'

We should arm every civilian with an M-16, pull our forces out, and tell them to "have at it."

And we'll once again retreat in the face of terrorists as another Hussein or Hitler emerges from the ruins. Great plan!!! [gag]

Nice attitude. I'm sure the terrorists would love your post. Look, if we were to leave the Middle East (it will never happen on W's watch) then do you honestly think that the terrorists are going to kill each other off? They'll take over Iraq, regroup and rejoice in their victory over the cowardly infadel, then they'd fly right on over here and start blowing up buildings, malls, schools and any other public place where they can inflict as many civilian casualties as possible. But at least you'd get your wish that our young American boys wouldn't be dying right and left in the Middle East s***pit. I know you're just pissed off that we lost so many soldiers yesterday and I'm just as angry, but cutting and running is not the type of crap we need to be spouting off while our boys are dropping the hammer on the bad guys in Iraq.

They had a military guy on, Gen Bob Scales (sp?) commenting on how these terrorist are trying to make this like vietnam and trying to change the will of the people regarding this war .. he mentioned what Ho said about wearing down the will of the American people to win vietnam

How this can't happen now because there is so much at stake

And then Dennis DeConcini gets on blaming Bush and how Bush has to admit he made a mistake and made mistake dealing with this war in Iraq

Don't these Dems realize they are feeding right into the hands of these terrorists

They are hiring 'civilitan' cooks instead of using US troops--I think this is foolish. The 'civilians' could be anybody and could put something in the food just like the candidate in Ukraine who had dioxin put in his soup.

The guys have felt like sitting ducks in that mess hall and other buildings in the compound ever since they got there - this attack came as no surprise. And that's from "inside information" you might say. Let's hope some of the HQ Staff gets a clue before this becomes a habit!

Tell us, Unc, just how you would have easily put a stop to such an attack.

See TexKat's post above. If I'm figuring the machine translation out correctly, it says that this was the first time that particular explosive (C4, I think) was used for this kind of attack in Iraq.

It isn't going to be soon. Probably we will have bases in Afghan and Iraq for a couple of decades. We are not going to cut and run. Most "insurgencies" take five to TEN YEARS to defeat, and good models exist for how to do so. It is unrealistic to think we can leave the Iraqis to "sort things out" on their own and in any way solve the problem of Islamofascism, any more than it was realistic to leave Japan after a year. Either we defeat them long-term or we will be suffering such incredible attacks here at home that 9/11 will be considered a "minor attack."

BS,I don't know what you call what is going on in Iraq. but it sure looks like civil war to me. It can be won and will be won or we can kiss off the US of A. The thug minority have been intimidating the rest of the country for so long, that they have forgotten or never experienced freedom.

They just need a little help to get their feet on the ground and secure power in the hands of a hopefully freedom loving group of Iraqis able to resist the small thug minority now causing so much havoc as they are reduced to second class citizens. I can see instant justice in the form of summary executions when the majority is able to secure their country from those who have wandered over the border to aid in the destruction.

How long would it take Syria and Iran to take serious advantage of an Iraq in worse shape than it is, if we were to pull out, and what of the good that our troops daily accomplish that we don't hear about because of the slanted media that wants just what you do, we can't win so let's pull out. The battle cry of the leftist losers.

Maybe, but my guess is they're to blinded by their lust for power and any inkling of bad new to bash pres. Bush they don't see it or see it and don't care.

That's the problem with this war. Supposedly fighting "side by side" with Iraqi's, you don't know who is your enemy till they blow you up... I am deeply sympathetic to our soldiers being in this kind of environment.
