Snow From New Mexico to Ohio Hinders Christmas Travel (Global Warming Strikes!)

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Up to a foot of snow was possible in parts of Indiana and Ohio as a storm spanning the nation's midsection arrived in the region Wednesday, and motorists already were sliding off roads.

Snow was falling from New Mexico, where some schools were closed, to the lower Great Lakes. The snow marked the leading edge of bitterly cold air flowing southward. Highs only in the teens were forecast Wednesday in the northern Texas Panhandle, where wind chills on Thursday could be as low as 15 below zero, the National Weather Service said.

At the northern extreme of the cold air mass, International Falls, Minn., the temperature fell from 8 below zero at midnight to 20 below by midmorning, the weather service said.

Eight inches of snow had fallen by late morning in the hilly terrain southwestern Indiana, where Evansville recorded only 7 inches all of last winter, and police reported numerous vehicles sliding off slippery roads.

``It's strictly the result of people going too fast,'' said state police 1st Sgt. Michael Bennett in Jasper.

In central Indiana, snow was more than 7 inches deep at Columbus and county government offices were closed because of roads were hazardous.

Through Thursday, snowfall totals could reach a foot in parts of southern Indiana and southwestern Ohio. The precipitation was moving toward the east, and rain and snow were possible Thursday from the Gulf of Mexico into New England.

Many residents of southern Indiana had started stocking up on shovels, work gloves, ice scrapers, road salt and canned goods.

``While they're here, they buy whatever else just in case,'' said Jason Harrington, grocery manager at Buehler's Buy-Low in downtown Evansville.

'Don't Drive'

Motorists in Kentucky were warned to expect about 4 inches of snow through Thursday, on top of a layer of ice produced by freezing rain.

``Don't drive unless you absolutely have to,'' said Kentucky State Police Sgt. Phil Crum.

To the west, up to 6 inches of snow was possible in parts of northern Texas, and a weather alert was issued for airlines at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.

Blowing snow and icy bridges caused several accidents in Oklahoma, where a tractor-trailer hauling several hundred goats overturned in Lawton. Some goats were killed and others ran free, the Highway Patrol reported.

Up to 4 inches of snow early Wednesday in New Mexico closed schools in Roswell and Raton, and U.S. 70 was shut down between Roswell and Ruidoso Downs.

One traffic death was blamed on icy pavement in New Mexico.

10" of white death in Columbus should be enough to cause mass hysteria. In fact, I'm certain I've seen folks drinking koolaid and zombies dragging people out of their overturned SUVs.

Well, off to Kroger to buy 27 loaves of bread and 50 gallons of milk.

Does anyone remember the article in Popular Science a few years ago that told us all about the coming ice age?

Yep, we were all going to die from the cold, freezing in our cold, dark homes.

Latest weather reports for Evansville IN - 18+ inches with drifing and blizzard conditions tonight. This will be the biggest snow storm we have had since the blizzard of 78. I have officially seen enough snow for the season.

If this is what Global Warming is going to bring to South Texas, I better invest in some cold weather geer and snow blower!

Snowing in Arlington Texas (between Ft Worth and Dallas). Not much but enough to coat the grass and vehicles. On the cold side. WeatherBug says it is 28 and I believe it.

Driving from Cleveland to Indy tomorrow....NOT taking I-71 Dayton & Columbus, OH. Sneak across 80/90 to I-69.

Indy & Ft Wayne are the western edges so far today.

p.s. Yes, the snow blasting Cleveland.

One of my daughters and her family are driving from WY to Lakeway TX for Christmas. They made it to Dallas before having to stop because of the snow there! When Dallas gets snow, it's smart not to venture out, because very few there know how to drive in it! They have 2-3 inches so far, and to a Dallasite, that's a blizzard---LOL!

I don't read that particular periodical, however the idea doesn't particularly bother me. I love winter.

I made a resolution some years ago:

I will never live in an area where the hardware stores put 50 lb. sacks of rock salt on pallets out front and have a sign in the window reading, "Snowplow Parts On Sale!"...

So far, so good.

We have about 4 inches here, but in Columbus (Ohio) they're calling for a foot.

I'm just north of Dayton. It has snowed about 7-8" here today so far, another 8-10" called for overnight. That would be a huge accumulation for December in the Dayton area. It barely usually even snows in December here, if it snows at all.

South of Indy got a little bit of snow. I work on the north side and live 15 miles north in Noblesville.

We FINALLY got the snow this evening and I love it. This will be my first white Christmas (we moved here from California last year).

I've always said the Erie area has two seasons: Winter and the Fourth of July. I moved here where they get snow, but measure it in inches, not feet.

This is your idea of a LITTLE bit of snow? What part of CA did you move from, the mountaintops out of Tahoe or Mount Shasta? ;>

Seriously, the snows kickin', but the 3/4-1" of ice and no heat's a b#$%h. But hey, we could all be making merry with the non-Iraqis in Iraq.

I had about 15" of snow on my driveway by the end of it. Shoveling it was a pain but I love the view.

And I have already done my Xmas time in the Middle East. Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is actually quite pleasant this time of year.
