- "It is a hard truth that countries that generously accept refugees encourage the production of more refugees, creating a problem as they attempt to solve one" (p. 137).

Graham emphasizes the negative effects of low-skilled immigration on the earnings of low-skilled workers in the United States in both periods of mass immigration (1880s to 1920s and post-1965). He reminds the reader that minorities in the US, especially African Americans, have paid the highest price. He also emphasizes the population growth due to immigration and what he perceives to be the negative effect on the environment of population growth due to high levels of immigration. Daniels ignores the environmental issues but mentions the former in passing in a dismissive way: ". . . the stringent economic conditions of the late Carter and early Reagan years created a climate in which many, particularly among the disadvantaged, sought scapegoats and found immigrants a convenient target. It has been traditional for trade unionists and labor economists to blame the economic problems of working people in general and trade unions in particular on immigrants" (p.49). I have yet to see such strident comments by a labor economist, but most agree that low skilled immigration is a contributing factor.

Amnesty of any kind creates a group of second class citizens. SUPERIOR second clas citizens. Illegals given amnesty would be allowed by definition to have drivers licenses with false addresses, false social security numbers and false names. What poorly documented illegal would give away their true identity, even under an amnesty program? Why none of course.

So the only people required to provide correct information would be bonified citizens. Maybe the big shot politicians can try some laws that give some legal status to illegals, but the glaring inconsistency in such a position will collapse of its own weight.

What happens ten years from now, when the flood has only increased?

Almost no issue divides Republicans as deeply....

or, rather, divides conservatives from the Republican political leadership.

BTW, Merry Christmas, to all!

Hmmmm....How can this be?

Several party types on this very site have repeatedly told us this relentless invasion of millions into our country is no big deal, and most American's just don't care about it.

"..then it stands to reason so can muslim terrorists come and go as they please too."

Lou Dobbs has been researching this subject. (He's the only guy on CNN worth watching) Look at this info:

"There are an estimated 80,000 criminal illegal aliens in the country, which are people who have committed crimes in the United States and are due for deportation but remain at large. An estimated 4,000 of those criminal illegal aliens are from countries that support terrorism."

One of our detractors stated that he wanted to know when Pres. Bush and Ted Kennedy were aligned on illegal immigration. Looks like it may be happening:

Migrant reform bill in works
Bush talk bolsters bipartisan effort by McCain, Kennedy

Billy House
Republic Washington Bureau
Dec. 25, 2004 12:00 AM
WASHINGTON - Arizona Sen. John McCain and Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy are working together to draft a bipartisan bill for comprehensive immigration reform to introduce in the new session of Congress.
The efforts, bolstered by President Bush's reiteration on Monday that he wants to give temporary legal status to any "willing worker" who has found a job Americans do not want, come as many Republicans in Congress are pointing to the threat of terrorism as a reason to further restrict immigration.
snip----
Still, even though Republicans control the presidency, as well as both chambers of Congress, any immigration bill would need significant support from Democrats to pass. That is one reason McCain, a Republican, is working with Kennedy, a Democrat, on a measure that could be supported by both parties, as well as Bush.
McCain says he's committed to getting comprehensive immigration reform passed.
"Since the election, Senator McCain has spoken with the president and many members of Congress, including Senator Kennedy, trying to forge a consensus on immigration reform in an effort to move forward on this issue during the new Congress," spokeswoman Crystal Benton said.
Kennedy, a longtime proponent of immigration reform said, "Congress needs to fix our broken immigration system as soon as possible, not only for economic and humanitarian reasons, but for urgent national security reasons as well. I'm hopeful we can reach bipartisan agreement early in the new Congress on reforms that are obviously needed."
Almost one year ago, Bush floated his idea of a guest worker program, just as he was entering his campaign for re-election. At the time, he offered no details, and did not talk much about it during the presidential race.
On Monday, Bush again raised the immigration issue, but wants Congress to write the legislation. He likely will mention the topic in his inauguration address on Jan. 20.
Generally, Bush says he wants to balance the concerns of those who say illegal immigration is costing taxpayers money, and may even be a national security threat, with U.S. business needs for a reliable source of low-cost labor. However, Bush also says he would not support a full amnesty of automatic citizenship for the estimated 8 million to 12 million undocumented immigrants currently working in this country illegally.
snip-----
"We are going to continue to push for a path for permanent residency," said Michele Waslin, director of immigration policy at the National Council of La Raza.
Both McCain and Kennedy have sponsored guest worker bills in the past, and need to come up with a bill that will pass muster on both sides of the political aisle.
In the just-completed Congress, McCain joined fellow Arizona Republican Reps. Jim Kolbe and Jeff Flake in sponsoring legislation that would grant a path to citizenship to qualified undocumented workers.
Kennedy also favors granting legal status - and eventually, citizenship - to undocumented workers who already have been in the country for several years, have jobs and pay taxes. His past bills also called for expediting citizenship for the spouses and children of undocumented immigrants.
"Both Senator McCain and Senator Kennedy think the system is broken and we need to fix it," said a congressional staffer familiar with discussions between the two senators. "I think at this point we're trying to see if we can bridge the gaps between our two offices and other (congressional offices) on this.
snip----
"The president doesn't have to run (for office) again. House members are always running for re-election," he said.

Immigrant workers wait for people looking for day laborers in Homestead, Fla., earlier this year. The Associated Press

This lawbreaking goes on day after day, 24/7 with the knowledge of law enforcement officials and every politician in Washington DC including President Bush.

Its hard to believe a Republican President and his party would encourage mass lawbreaking by foreign criminals, but pictures like these prove it.

Keep McCain away from it. Think what he did and called it Campaign Finance Reform. We don't need another McCain fiasco bill.

Immigration is number one with overspending a close second. We have developed a class of boomers that have lost all idea of conservatism. The Republican elite are a bigger threat to our system than the liberals because they try to disguise their intentions of a socialist world order.

If the young white men in my area were to gather like this on public street corners they would be charged with loitering or something. I can tell you it would not be allowed to continue. We need the DC chapter of FR that gathered at the white house for years against Clinton to be there again with those pictures.

Just goes to show that certain Party Types are flat out wrong on this issue. It along with terrorism/Iraq are IMO THE two most important issues facing any Pol of either Party. Earth to Rove, listen and take remedial steps.

I agree about CFR and McCain. And this immigration reform will be just as worthless. Do you think they'll call it the McCain-Kennedy-Bush bill??

Hillary Clinton is one of the first to publically voice opposition. Good for her!

Trust Hillary at your own peril. What she says in a campaign, and what she would do if in office, are two different things.

Time magazine quote:
“The number of illegal aliens flooding into the US this year will total 3 million - enough to fill 22,000 Boeing 727-700 airliners, or 60 flights every day for a year.”

Our number one export is inflation; riding out of town on the payments for imported goods.

The number 2 export is our jobs.
