You are, of course, ignoring private donations and military contributions. But then, you're probably a socialist.

come on...this is the perfect opportunity for them to get their Birkenstock's dirty...to make a difference in the world. Oh, wait...they'll be doing that on Jan 20th in DC by turning their back to President Bush. Forgot about that...conflict with the old schedule.

Maybe after Jan 20th? Do Sri Lankans like granola?

No, but I think they like hippies. A bit stringy(also mildly intoxicating), but you can live off them.

The United Nations urged rich nations a quarter of a century ago to give away 0.7 percent of their gross domestic product every year in the form of development aid.

To date, however, just a handful of European nations, most of them in Scandinavia, actually meet that goal.

The United States, the world's largest economy, contributes about 0.13 a year of its GDP to development aid. But that figure excludes aid to Iraq and Afghanistan as well as food aid, where the United States is the world's largest donor.

From an outsiders perspective. The US prides itself as being a mature democracy and a champion of free speech, yet judging by some of the comments I've seen in this forum, it seems like you can have free speech as long as it ain't 'Anti-American'.

I think you need to take a look around and see where you are at...Kitty isn't amused

Thank you for posting the info that got me to the Davy Crockett story. Prescient. Considering the thread where I first read your post has been yanked, I'm glad you've posted it elsewhere.

I myself don't donate to 'professional' charities out of the belief that 100% of my donation is best spent when handed directly to the intended recipient, and nevermind that tax receipt business. Yeah, I know sometimes the objects of charity are that way due to bad decisions, but I put more trust in my method than in government's decisions re: my money.

Besides, there's something wrong when the top person in a charitible organization makes more money through donations than the workin Joes and Janes whose money he solicits. Shouldn't he be putting his money where his mouth is? I'm not rich, but I make a living at less than half of what the local UW head makes in his position there.

That said, I'll be donating to a charity aiming to help the tsunami victims as soon as I can, but it won't be one of the 2 I've mentioned here.

Doesn't look like the hippies bowing to Mother Gaia does a dang thing, does it? But come tomorrow they'll be even more howling over global warming as the culprit, whatever.

And those anti-capitalists are the first to strongarm you with guilt over money.

The asylum has no walls.

Check out the Kerry Spot over at NRO--some meathead in NYC has already written a letter to the editor blaming us for the size of the tsunami.

Haha, I flew out of Phuket the night before the tsunami! My hotel was right on the beach, and I went to Phi Phi and all those islands. Lucky me, haha.

Actually, no haha. I think I'll go buy a lottery ticket now.
