ATLANTA -- The mayor is threatening a country club with up to $90,000 in fines for refusing to extend spousal benefits to the partners of gay members. Mayor Shirley Franklin said last week in a letter to the Druid Hills Golf Club that the club violated Atlanta's human rights ordinance, which requires businesses to treat domestic partners registered with the city as married couples. Franklin said she is ordering the city solicitor to fine the club $500 a day for up to six months -- a total of $90,000 -- unless the rule is changed.

Atlanta must be VERY proud of this thing!
"We continue to believe there is a legitimate and legally recognized distinction between 'spouse' and 'domestic partner' and our policies are non-discriminatory," the letter stated. "Equally important is our belief that the City ordinances that attempt to dictate the Club's membership policies are invalid. Further, in our opinion the Mayor has no jurisdiction to impose this fine. While we regret this matter has still not been resolved, Druid Hills Golf Club is prepared to defend its position."
Ugh!
The heckuvit is, she had been doing some very fiscally responsible things, before this nonsense. Making tough choices, getting the budget under control, layoffs of layabouts, etc.
What people need to understand about Atlanta, is that the City of Atlanta proper is only around 400,000 people. The metro area outside the City of Atlanta is over 10x the population of the city.
lol at that. That's one of my favorite movies, and the Ruby Rhod character is just hilarious. Bzzzzzzt!
Where do they get all those wonderful balls?
I believe the city is holding the club's liquor license hostage, so it's not that simple.
"The Druid Hills case was brought by two gay members of the club, Randy New and Lee Kyser. New is a former head of Georgia Equality. Kyser's partner, Lawrie Demorest, has been a high-ranking member of several campaigns for former city council president Cathy Woolard, an openly gay candidate."
I don't think Buckhead is on this case for the mayor.
Hey, they're Druids. Mayor should respect their distinct culture.
