I join with everyone else in saying I'm glad your daughter and the others involved are ok.

My mom made me buckle up before she would start the car. I don't remember a single time in my childhood when she'd turn the key before I was buckled. That created such a habit that I feel almost naked if I'm in a car and not buckled, so I won't even go down the street without a seatbelt. It's a good policy for parents to use with their kids, I think.

I taught my kids (and my resistant wife!!!) that I wasn't going anywhere unless everyone was in seat belts. My son has survived two major wrecks (only one of which he was the driver).

I've had a similar experience, however, I'm bitterly opposed to the government forcing drivers to buckle up.

The word 'bitterly' understates my position.

Better a little discomfort than a vegetative state.

Would you mind articulating here the reason for your bitter opposition?

Glad to know your daughter is ok...

I lost my boyfriend years ago in a car accident (front end collision from a drunk driver who swerved into his lane). He was wearing his seatbelt, but still hit the steering wheel, crushing his chest and killing him. He only had one small visible scratch from the accident --- that was it. He was only 19

For years I wondered what may have happened if he wasn't wearing the seatbelt.... Probably still would have died, but you never know.

Don't know why I even posted this, but your thread has brought back many memories for me.

Interesting question. I used to Crew Chief a professional road racing team back in 1980.

In the course of that work I did some caravan driving from track to track with a Canadian team. A couple of the fellows on that team used to work for Transport Canada (if I remember the name correctly). They said it was like our National Highway Safety Admin.

These fellows had done direct work in all kinds of crash testing.

They told me that no matter what you did, if you came to an abrupt stop at anything over 55 miles per hour it was a matter of "is God with you or not". They said most of the time you would die from internal trauma and the ones that did not die they just could not explain from any consistent point of view.

Every time a seat belt post is here we get the same stories.

I say we need to pass a law requiring helmets for drivers also. Many people are killed by head injuries seat belts or no. And Yes those Nascar head rests and 4 point seat belts. and lets put bumpers on cars that will not be damaged in collisions under 35 MPH.

And lets all listen to some cop on the scene who has reached the age of 21 and knows all about highway accidents.
Lets go all the way and make cars so they wont go over the speed limit.

I am still waiting for the promised savings the Insurance companies promised we would get when they sold this seat belt law to legislators.

By the way seat belt laws were forced on most states by the feds who with held Federal highway funds from states who didnt pass their laws for them. Political blackmail .

I say choose them if you like, dont knock those who are claustrophobic in them ,or who just dont want to wear them because they saw a hole in their neck. Or for any other reason they may have.

I thank God that I was wearing my seatbelt when I flipped my car on I-70 in Wyoming.

Actual photo taken by Hillary's Lovely Legs after she crawled out of the window...............and fainted

That was exactly my point.

I mean...imagine in your mind's eye a freaking Honda CIVIC getting hit head-on while going 55 mph.

IMHO, ain't no airbag big enough to let you unstrap and walk away unscathed.

I work for an organ procurement organization, the number of adult donors listed as "unrestrained driver" is amazing. The number of unrestrained children is absolutely heartbreaking.

It's little short of a miracle that anyone is alive at all considering the nature of the accident.

Just marketing. My mother was killed in a collision while wearing her seatbelts.

The insurance company paid an extra $1000 because of it, though.

Oh, joy! I'm so happy for you.

And thanks for taking the time to "remind" everybody why we use our seatbelts!

If the airbags deployed then please tell me exactly what the seat belts did.

That cured me of driving unrestrained.

If I happen to drive to the end of the driveway without mine, I feel like I just may literally fall out of the car.

Insurance companies should be lobbying for technology that makes auto theft an ancient event.

GPS should be mandatory...just like seatbelts.

My BMW (M5) has an ignition key which has a computer chip in it. The car will not start without the key....or it will come to a dead stop after a few seconds.

Of course, to the best of my knowledge, this isn't reflected in my insurance premiums on the vehicle.

When I was little, my mother had me convinced that the car wouldn't start unless everyone inside had their seatbelt buckled.

If it was an early 70's model, (like my 73 Dodge) that may have been true. For a few years they had interlocks on the front seats that prevented to car from starting if the belts weren't fastened. Many folks disabled that feature or simply wrapped the belts around the back of the seat and left them buckled there.

Tomorrow we'll try to take some digital photos of the car. If we do, I'll see if I can figure out how to post them here.

In the meantuime, I'm certainly not ruling out divine intervention. However, He intervenes in many ways, one of the most important being his admonition (Romans 13 and elsewhere) that we submit to the civil laws, which here in California require seatbelt usage.
