Not sure what you're reaching for. Are you suggesting that airbags eliminate the need for seatbelts? In my opinion, that would be a very foolish tradeoff. I'll wear my belt and suspenders....

That's interesting; I hadn't heard that before. It's really a shame more manufacturers don't make them that way now. That's definitely not the case, though, as when I was that young, I always rode in the back seat (mom's orders). Also, a friend who was less trusting of my mother than I was decided to test it one time and ended up holding up the belt buckle as we were moving through the parking lot to show he'd never buckled it. He got yelled at for that; I thought it was funny. :-)

Here where I live in a rural area. There was 4 people in a car. A married elderly couple was in the backseat unbuckled and their son and daughter in law were in the front seats buckled up. They were rear ended by a state trooper who was going at high rate of speed. Anyhow the elderly woman was thrown fore ward and the automatic seat beat arm for the front seat area of the car is what she hit with her head. The impact of her head hitting it split her head wide open (I won't go into great detail of her head injuries) but she died instantly. Her husband I think hit the windshield and died later. The 2 people in the front seat survived and so did the state trooper who resigned after the accident after seeing the damage that was done to the elderly lady. They pulled out in front of the trooper while he was chasing some one on 2 lane rural highway.

So if the elderly couple would have been wearing their tablets in the backseat they would have lived.

What is it that you want the government to be involved in that it isn't?
It tells us how to live our lives in the details.
Some laws are good, they are there to protect society from those causing harm or damage to others. (speed limits protect other drivers too.)
Since when have we been told how to protect ourselves in our own car?
Guns kill the owner occasionally too in an accident, should we say no one can own a gun because they might kill themselves accidentally?

I buckle up every time but the shoulder strap hits me in the neck as I'm short. And it's been proven that airbags break short peoples necks, that's why kids are advised to ride in the back but I can't drive from back there. ;-)

This is no joke. An airbag can kill you if you are not buckled up. There was a minor accident at low speed, the driver was not buckled up. On impact he slid forward and got hit in the chest by the deploying airbag. He didn't have any obvious injuries, went home and died two hours later from internal bleeding.
It is true, I have seen it happen.

I was a volunteer firefighter for a number of years, and I saw motor vehicle collisions ALL the time. You have a MUCH better chance of coming out alive if you are wearing your seat belt. Air bags are a poor replacement and are, in fact, meant to be an adjunct to a seat belt -- not a replacement.

Thanks for the good wishes. I'm glad to find someone willing to reconsider their previous decision not to buckle. You may have noticed that several "bucklers" on this thread referred to how habitually they buckle and how they feel naked without it.

May I just suggest that you simply turn this into a habit by never starting your car without buckling? Bless you.

Look, I didn't post this to get into an argument about legislation or law enforcement--in other words, it's you who is picking this fight. All I'm trying to do is to persuade people to buckle up, not require them to.

Having said that, I'd point out that whereas the US 2nd Amendment confers to private citizens the right to bear arms, there is no similar specific constitutional right to go unbuckled, so your analogy is offpoint. And one could argue that requiring seatbelt usage protects society, which is the standard you yourself used in acknowledging society's right to legislate highway speed limits, from the costs of dealing with the carnage that results from unbuckled riders.
