County unveils possible new logo that some see as homage to president

GEORGETOWN -- "W" or "Dubya"?
Williamson officials unveiled what might be the county's new logo on Tuesday, and it's a giant "W."
"We felt it represents the county well," spokeswoman Connie Watson said.
But some observers see a connection in the choice of the letter for a county rife with "W" bumper stickers and Republican voters dedicated to President Bush.
"Oh, yeah, it was the first thing that crossed my mind: Dubya," Precinct 2 Commissioner Greg Boatright said of the logo, which took four months to produce and cost the county $12,000.
In addition to the giant "W," the logo has the words "Williamson County" and "1848," the year the county was established.
"You've got a county with 27 elected officials, and they're all Republican," said Commissioner Tom McDaniel, who represents Precinct 3. "I guess if you were going to pick a letter, 'W' wouldn't be a bad one."
Still, Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Jimmy Rocha bristled at the design.
"I definitely think it's partisan," Rocha said. "Everybody knows what W stands for."
The logo was created by Georgetown company GX Creative Communications, which also designed that city's new logo -- a less potentially politicized cursive "G" that was also unveiled Tuesday.
"We went through a lot of 'W's,' " said Judith Manriquez, a partner in the design firm.
A group of elected officials and county employees chose the final design, which was presented to the Commissioners Court on Tuesday. The group did consider an alternate final design, Watson said -- another "W."
The commissioners will decide whether to make the "W" the county's official logo at their Jan. 18 meeting. If they vote for the logo, only departments directly under the control of the Commissioners Court, such as elections and roads, will be required to use it.
Watson said she is sure the logo is not meant to evoke the president.
"This is a coincidence," she said. "Another four years, and I don't know who will be elected president after that. W is for Williamson County. That is our initial."
Nice to know you are right close by..Have seen you lots on FR...nice to meet a neighbor.
Do you know if the Lago paper is sold in the Georgetown area???
I've been seeing stickers around here that are in the style of the "W" stickers but have an "M" on them. I can't tell what they say underneath the M (where the W's have "The President").
65% voted for Bush and the 27 elected officials. Poor Party Chairman Jimmy Rocha (should be jimma cata) -- can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Go to Travis co.
I don't think so. It's called The North Lake Travis Log. I have seen it in Jonestown.
"You've got a county with 27 elected officials, and they're all Republican," said Commissioner Tom McDaniel, who represents Precinct 3. "I guess if you were going to pick a letter, 'W' wouldn't be a bad one."The Williamson county DemocRATS could put up a sign at their headquarters.
A big L .....
Williamson County....come on vacation, leave on probation.
I went to school at Southwestern University in Georgetown. There were several big capital murder cases tried there while I was there. Henry Lee Lucas (serial killer - or not, depending on which way the wind blew) and Jeanine Jones (nurse baby killer).
Seemed like when the defense requested a change of venue, they sent the bad ones to Georgetown to make sure they got the death penalty.
Williamson County/Georgetown:
Just up from Austin. I'm sure the LIBS in Austin will be pleased
driving up to Dallas/Ft. Worth seeing that BIG W!!hahaha!!! :^D
Still, Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Jimmy Rocha bristled at the design.
"I definitely think it's partisan," Rocha said. "Everybody knows what W stands for."
Yep, W stands for WINNER!
Hey, I get that here in Seattle a lot too! That sure surprised me when I moved up from TexasI had no idea Bush was so popular here. Of course, they do things a little differently in the Northwest: Back in Texas, we made the #1 sign with our index finger, but apparently here they use the middle finger for that. <shrug> Eager to fit in, I quickly picked up the local custom and now return the gesture. When in Rome...
Hey pardner, good to hear from you again.
You get no "Number 1's" waved at you if you have a gun rack in the back window of your truck... :^)
During the past few months, I have had many drivers flip me off, and most had skerry/edwards, Re-defeat Bush or other bumper stickers. One gal flipped me off on the way home, and I blew her a kiss. She sped away and out of sight.
I don't have a gun rack in my S10 Chevy truck, but there may be a gun under my seat at times.
Williamson County cast almost five times as many votes in 2004 than it did in 2004. And the GOP margin over the Democrat candidate exploded almost tenfold, from 4,267 votes in 1980 to 40,107 votes in 2004.
If I were Mr. Rocha, I'd be very, very quiet.
1980 Presidential vote
Reagan (R) 15,035 (56.4%)
Carter (D) 10,408 (39.0%)
Others 1,218 (4.6%)
2004 Presidential vote
Bush (R) 83,284 (65.0%)
Kerry (D) 43,177 (33.6%)
Others 1,797 (1.4%)
During the weeks leading up to the election in Nov., the RATs were running commercials on the radio and TV asking their base to vote in great numbers. Looks like that didn't help, as they lost any elected offices (if they had any) to the Republicans. There message DID get out, just as their national message got out.
I just sent my check for the obscene county tax last week to discover this week that my county spent $12,000 for a frelling letter?
This is a joke right?
Not a joke, according to the Austin Pravda. Don't you know the libs in Austin are upset?
As every resident in Williamson Cnty should be. Damn taxes have soared at an alarming rate in the last 5 years & these wingnuts are spending $12,000 for a letter? They could have asked Vanna White.
I want my check back.
