'W' is for . . . Williamson County?

County unveils possible new logo that some see as homage to president

GEORGETOWN -- "W" or "Dubya"?

Williamson officials unveiled what might be the county's new logo on Tuesday, and it's a giant "W."

"We felt it represents the county well," spokeswoman Connie Watson said.

But some observers see a connection in the choice of the letter for a county rife with "W" bumper stickers and Republican voters dedicated to President Bush.

"Oh, yeah, it was the first thing that crossed my mind: Dubya," Precinct 2 Commissioner Greg Boatright said of the logo, which took four months to produce and cost the county $12,000.

In addition to the giant "W," the logo has the words "Williamson County" and "1848," the year the county was established.

"You've got a county with 27 elected officials, and they're all Republican," said Commissioner Tom McDaniel, who represents Precinct 3. "I guess if you were going to pick a letter, 'W' wouldn't be a bad one."

Still, Williamson County Democratic Party Chairman Jimmy Rocha bristled at the design.

"I definitely think it's partisan," Rocha said. "Everybody knows what W stands for."

The logo was created by Georgetown company GX Creative Communications, which also designed that city's new logo -- a less potentially politicized cursive "G" that was also unveiled Tuesday.

"We went through a lot of 'W's,' " said Judith Manriquez, a partner in the design firm.

A group of elected officials and county employees chose the final design, which was presented to the Commissioners Court on Tuesday. The group did consider an alternate final design, Watson said -- another "W."

The commissioners will decide whether to make the "W" the county's official logo at their Jan. 18 meeting. If they vote for the logo, only departments directly under the control of the Commissioners Court, such as elections and roads, will be required to use it.

Watson said she is sure the logo is not meant to evoke the president.

"This is a coincidence," she said. "Another four years, and I don't know who will be elected president after that. W is for Williamson County. That is our initial."

I lived in Williamson for about 7 years in the 80s, and taxes were lower than in Travis. Now they are about the same, but I'm back in Travis. Our taxes go up almost every year. We disputed our tax bill in 1990. Our home was assessed at over $150,000 because of our street name - Lakefront.

After I told them that street was a large oval, and we were on the side AWAY from Lake Travis. I told them, the only time we saw lake water was when the lake hit 711' in 91, they dropped it to just under $100K.

You're lucky that Travis County listened to your appraisal complaint.

We disputed our appraisal 2 years ago along with a professional appriasal in hand. No luck - awful- just dreadful- experience. I still need a horse tranquilizer when talking about it.

You know how bad the taxes have become in Williamson County? I tell my relatives back on Long Island what we pay annually and the first question they ask is - do you live near the water?

Bottom line - we can't wait to move out of Williamson County. Taxes are too high & the quality of living has taken a nose dive.

We took the prices of other homes on and near our home. They looked at the difference, and that was one thing that got us lower taxes.

Williamson Co. is building quite a number of county buildings and other public offices and parks. That is one reason the taxes are on the increase. We have the same in Travis, except it is run by RATs in Austin.

The Live Oak County Republican Party Headquarters in George West, Texas had this sign up over the door:

Welcome to George W, Texas!

Odd little thing about the Austin metro area. It had perhaps the largest swing to Kerry from Gore of any metro area in the entire United States, and the area includes Williamson County. Every county touching Travis County (Austin) swung to Kerry (except rather tiny Burnett which is out there and swung 2% to Bush), offsetting most but not all of the Hispanic and East Texas swing to Bush. The counties below had the biggest swing to Kerry from Gore in Texas. The counties in bold are the Austin area, and the figues on the left are the change in the Bush margin from 2000 to 2004 in percentage terms (e.g., Travis -20.188%).
