Berlin - Germany is growing less tolerant of immigrants, especially Muslims, and more inclined toward anti-Semitism, regarding Jews in the same vein as foreigners, according to a new study of German attitudes.
"There is no distinction anymore between Jews, foreigners and Muslims," said Paul Spiegel, chairman of the Central Council of German Jews.
According to "German Conditions 2004," a study published by Bielefeld University and conducted by Wilhelm Heitmeyer, two thirds of the Germans consider the conduct of Israelis toward the Palestinians the same as the conduct of the Nazis toward the Jews and willingly express their disdain toward Jews living in Germany.[snip]
The main target of German xenophobia is its community of 3 million Muslims, mainly Turks. Seventy percent of the Germans surveyed said that Muslims do not fit in with Western society, and German society in particular.

In the State Department report, Germany was singled out, with several other Western European nations, for "notable increases in [anti-Semitic] incidents" in 2002 and 2003. To its credit, Germany also was one of several European nations recognized for taking concrete steps to decrease anti-Semitism.
A rise in the number of Muslims in Western Europe, many of them poor and uneducated, is contributing to an increase in already deeply rooted anti-Semitism there, according to the State Department report.

While anti-Semitism and anti-immigrant xenophobia were once the ideologies of skinheads and other far-right groups, Mr. Heitmeyer said some of those views have gone mainstream, with the major increase in xenophobia coming from people who consider themselves moderates.
Mr. Heitmeyer said this trend came with a growing feeling of economic uncertainty in Germany, where unemployment is 10.5 percent and there is a concern about foreigners taking jobs.

I've been in Germany for over 6 years now and have simply not seen or heard any anti-semitism. I do speak fluent German and talk to people of all soci-economic categories. The only place I don't find myself is in the East and I honestly thimnk that is where this rise has got to be occurring. The West Germans are tolerant and apologetic. Indeed there is some hostility toward Muslims (but no more than in the US and certainly less than at FR), but I rarely hear Germans even mention the word "Juden".

This is good. It means that the masses even in Europe don't like their islamic hordes.
Longer run, these 70 percent may have clout, to force their government(s) to shut the immigration door.
In an ideal world, the muslims would take heed of the animosity they have rightly earned, and improve behavior.
Not likely.
The Europeans have forgotten thier experience with the Muslim World. Around the year 850 40 Christians were beheaded in Sapin for critizing the Muslim religion. They who forget HISTORY are DOOMED to repeat it.
It seems the Europeans never Learn. Look at Prince Harry's wearing of a Nazi Army Uniform with a Swatztika on it and WWII was only about 40 years ago!
Soon it will be time for Germany to reap what it has so carefully sown.

Son, The Beatles were 40 years ago. WWII was 1939-1945: sixty years ago it ended. This doesn't make Prince Harry's prank less idiotic; neither does it make him less of a Royal Anachronism. In reality, he is just a silly kid who may accidentally become king of England one day.

Agreed. I lived there for 4 years and moved back to the US last summer. I never saw or heard any anti-semitism.
The immigrant, or Ausländer problem, is an entirely different matter. To mix the immigration problem with charges of anti-semitism (as the article did) seems deliberate. The German people pay huge taxes to support Ausländer benefits for housing, clothing, dental plans, medical car, food, allowances, etc. Many of the immigrants are from Muslim nations.
