Teen Admits Steering Car Toward Boys on Sidewalk After Snowballs Thrown
Star Tribune ^ | January 28, 2005 | Paul Gustafson

An Irondale High School student who told police that he "freaked out" and deliberately drove his car through students on a sidewalk after they threw snowballs at him in New Brighton on Tuesday was charged Thursday with second-degree assault and criminal vehicular operation.

Witnesses told police that Arnold was driving south on Long Lake Road a block south of the high school just after 2 p.m. Tuesday when someone in a group of three Irondale students walking north on the other side of the road threw a snowball at Arnold's car.

Arnold passed the group but quickly turned around, drove up on the sidewalk and through the group from behind, injuring two of them, the complaint states.

One 17-year-old boy was hit and thrown onto the car's hood before falling off to the side, police said. The boy was unconscious for a time and was taken to an urgent-care clinic by a parent.

A second 17-year-old boy was struck on the right hand by the car, fracturing a bone. A third boy jumped out of the car's path and was not injured, police said.

Arnold was arrested a short time later when he returned to his parent's home.

He told police "I freaked out or I don't know what you want to call it, but I turned around and ran them down," according to the criminal complaint.

Confession...I've thrown snowballs at cars many times growing up between the ages of 10-16.

I remember being chased/hunted down by a 4x4 truck through the streets of my neighborhood. Man, that would not have been good if he caught my friends and me.

couple of things here I think...

first of all, the kid needs to learn to control his temper. going after the kids that threw the snowballs is one thing, but running them over is quite another, as he will find out.

Secondly, the stupid kids throwing snowballs in the first place need to realize there are psychos out there on the roads....

I do hope that one kid recovers fully.

Yes the driver of the car was wrong, but snowball throwers should also be held accountable.

Really, it is dangerouse, the driver could accidently lose control of the vehicle.

As a kid, my buddy and I were throwing a tennis ball at the side of a building. After about 15 minutes, some dude pops his head out the window with a bow and arrow. We took off and found a 'safer' wall to play against. Ahh, the narrow escapes of childhood.

If he used a gun, there would be an outcry to ban guns. He used a car. So when is Congress going to save us by enacting the Assault Vehicle Ban?

Is "I freaked out" an admissible defense?

Am I missing something here? Why would you "freak out" because someone threw snowballs at your car? What's the big deal? You didn't want your paint chipped so you tried to murder someone?

For some reason I get the impression that the kid in the car was harrassed in the past and finally had enough. You don't bring a knife to a gun battle and you don't escape on foot in a snowball fight when the other guy has a car. Lucky for them he didn't back up and finish the job.

In the future I am sure these poor innocent youths will think twice before hurling objects at passing motorists.

I'm not excusing the idiot who was driving the car...
but by the time kids are 17, you'd think that they'd KNOW to run away after throwing the snowballs...
Sheeesh, when I was a kid, we had THAT figured out when we were only maybe 7~8...
by the time we were teens, cars were a boring target and we simply focused on splattering each other.

Heh heh! I remember being chased through a foot of snow on a steep forested hillside, by a very large, very physically fit and very angry young man of about 25, after we tagged his new truck but good. Damn near caught me. The friend I was with (the one who threw the snowball, in fact) was a cornerback on our high school team and easily outran me.

I faced the choice of running till I thought my heart and lungs would burst out of my chest, or getting the beating of my life. Served me right, I guess....

The kid in the car also has to learn – you never admit to nothing no how.

Did President Clinton teach him anything?

We used to throw snowballs at the cops ;'}

It was an elaborate game of "tag" that only ended when one of us got caught and ratted the rest of us out....

(amazing that we ever survived!)

I will give him credit for at least trying to tell the truth. He might have some integrity, even if he doesnt have any self control.

ONE person's car I'd NOT have thrown snowballs at was Dale Earnhardt.

I know I aint the only kid (stupid/idiot kid) doing this growing up...ha ha..
That truck was like the kind on the show "The Fall Guy", big lifted thing that was jumping curbs.
Now its my duty to make sure my soon to be born son doesnt follow in my footsteps.
