UNC officially rang in Ally Week on Monday by encouraging students to team up with members of the LGBTQ community on campus.
The kickoff celebration, which featured balloons, food and honored speakers, was meant to put the spotlight on a series of events that focus on encouraging people to become allies of the University’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer members.
“The purpose of the week is to promote unity in the LGBTQ community and their allies,” said Jason Wang, co-coordinator of the week. “We would like to promote a better understanding of the issues.”
Margaret Jablonski, vice chancellor for student affairs, spoke at the initial celebration, encouraging students to attend events throughout the week.
She noted that all students need to become more aware of the issues the week raises, adding that she will do her part to increase awareness at the administrative level.
A variety of events this week — including panel discussions, films, information sessions and a forum for candidates running for student body president — will provide an outlet for discussion.
The forum, which will be held at 8 p.m. today in 305 Dey Hall, will include a question-and-answer session with all four candidates.
Candidates will have the opportunity to present their views and positions on LGBTQ issues before members vote to endorse a candidate.
Tommy Rimbach, who will moderate the forum, said the event will cover myriad issues including nondiscrimination policies and other precepts pertinent to the community.
Rimbach said the group — the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender-Straight Alliance — is looking for a candidate who will go out of the way to support LGBTQ issues and who has a broad knowledge about the community.
Candidates Seke Ballard, Seth Dearmin and Tom Jensen have committed to encourage Safe Zone training. The program seeks to promote awareness of LGBTQ issues and to provide a support network for LGBTQ students.
Candidate Leigha Blackwell has pledged to keep up to date with the organization and maintain contact with its leaders.
As part of Ally Week events, Dearmin hosted a Safe Zone training session Monday instead of attending the College Republicans’ SBP forum.
Ally Week was organized last semester by the Allied Planning committee, which comprises about 30 faculty, staff and students who noticed a need to educate people about the LGBTQ community.
“It’s not just about the LGBTQ people but also their relationship with allies,” said Stephanie Chang, coordinator of the LGBTQ office in the Division of Student Affairs. “There needs to be more linkage between the two.”
Ally Week's kickoff celebration in front of the Student Union on Monday morning offers free refreshments, buttons and informational pamphlets. The goal of the week is to encourage students to become allies of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community.

Somebody help me out here. It used to be just "gay." Then lesbian was added because apparently gay meant "male on male lovin" and the lesbians wanted their own category. Then "bi" was added. I could understand that maybe bisexual people wanted their own category as well. This was followed by "transgendered" which I assumed were people who just liked to dress as the opposite sex. I don't know, it is hard to keep up with these definitions. Now we have "queer" added on top of everything else!
Can someone please explain to me how someone is "queer" but not gay or vice-versa. I'm thoroughly confused.
