Back in a College Psychology Class I recall looking at Suicide Rates in Europe and cross-tabbing those Rates with amount of sunlight and alcoholism. There seemed to be a very clear connection in Europe.
RED States Have more Guns. I hate to say it but it is the only linkage I see in their table unless you want to say that Old White Men Have the Highest Suicide Rates, Red States Have the Most Old White Men Therefore Red States Have the Highest Suicide Rates.
The alcoholism may be more prevalent in the Red states(can only speak for my state), but seems the sunlight would favor the red states. I don't know, but it is interesting. Thanks.
How spread out is NYC? I honestly don't know.
Houston and LA are considerably larger in terms of land area. I think Dallas may be bigger in terms of land mass.

I'm pretty sure Dallas is bigger in land mass. DFW is confusing to most. Houston gets credit for being the largest city in Texas, but DFW dwarfs it. It's just not as readily apparent. The way I get the message to people is that out of the 10 largest cities in Texas, 7 of them are in the DFW metroplex. Houston is larger within it's city limits, but the Dallas GMA dwarfs Houston's GMA

Suicide occurs when there is a confluence of ongoing psychic pain and the occurrence of an energizing, triggering stressor.

Yes I agree, Wyoming is a beautiful and somewhat pristine state. I have hunted and been through Wyoming going to visit my mother in Portland. I think its the desolation and possibly boredom that may be causing this suicide trend. But I think visiting Wyoming is like taking a step back in time to the old West. (And I mean that in a good way)
I think it's a combination of culture and access to psychological help. In most Blue States, there is little or no shame attached to seeking professional help for depression and other psychological problems. Furthermore, professional help is readily available.
I imagine that in a small town in Wyoming or Montana, there would be a greater stigma attached to psychological problems and that professional help for such problems would be less readily available.
I'm glad someone finally brought up the word "old". What percentage of Wyoming's population is over fifty and/or retired? That would definitely be a factor.

Oh I know it. I just can't imagine ever being forced to live in rural America again.
