There were combat photographers with every unit on Iwo (my father in law was in Signals. His jeep was blown up under him but he was miraculously not even scratched.) We know about the famous ones, but there were lots of others. Three different photogs took those three photos - Rosenthal, Lowery, and Campbell.
They "happened to be there" because their units were there, and had been ordered to take the high ground so the Japs would quit lobbing stuff on everybody's heads.

Thanks for pointing that out as well. Have you read "Flags of Our Fathers", by any chance? I think you would find it riveting. It gave me a whole new appreciation for my dad. (Please give your father-in-law my warmest regards if he is still alive - my dad was a PhM2c on a medical team attached to the 4th Marine Division.)

I used to watch and see what Spitboy thought about the issues but found it quicker to just go to the DNC website. For him to even suggest this was staged with no evidence is comletely outrageous and deserves an apology to the Marine Mom who lost a son!! Chris and Not-Reagan are complete pondscum.
