Franken expected to make announcement on candidacy

WASHINGTON - Just one day after U.S. Sen. Mark Dayton decided not to run for a second term, comedian Al Franken may be throwing his hat into the ring.

Last year, Franken said he wanted to run for the Senate in 2008. But last night he told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that he is now considering his candidacy for next year.

Franken, a Minnesota native, plans to make an announcement live on his national radio show in Washington D.C. this morning. 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS will be in the studio with Franken for that announcement.

Meanwhile, former U.S. Sen Rod Grams, who lost his seat to Dayton in 2000, told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that he is running for the open seat. He said Social Security, the deficit, the budget, Medicare and Medicaid are what prompted him to enter the race.

Other Republicans who may consider a run include U.S. Reps. Mark Kennedy and Gil Gutknecht, and Minn. Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer.

On the DFL side, activist Buck Humphrey said he's not ruling out a bid for the U.S. Senate.

The grandson of the late Vice President Hubert Humphrey and the son of former state Attorney General Skip Humphrey first said he wasn't interested in joining a growing list of candidates seeking the party nomination. But Buck Humphrey said later that he wouldn't rule out running for the open Senate seat.

Other potential DFL candidates include Minneapolis lawyer Mike Ciresi, Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson of Willmar, state Senator Steve Kelley of Hopkins, former Congressman Bill Luther, Hennepin County Attorney Amy Klobuchar, and former public development official Rebecca Yanisch.

State House Minority Leader Matt Entenza was considered to be a potential Senate candidate by many. However, he said Wednesday that he's not interested. During a visit to Worthington, Entenza said his interests are entirely in Minnesota.

Here in Mpls we have the great privilege of having a station that carries the whole lineup.
Did you know George Bush is a bad person? No make that the reincarnation of A. Hitler. And the Republicans want to steal grandmas dog food and kick her out into the street?

I listen to it sometimes, it's a hoot.

Isn't that Garofa-ho on that too. I heard her screeching on Hannity's show once and just had to laugh, and she wonders why her career has gone down the toilet.

I'd be shocked if he ran. Guy like this don't have the guts to put it on the line like this. They do much better hiding and taking pot shots at others without having to face any feedback. He won't debate callers on his little radio show how can he handle a real debate on issues? That being said there is no accounting for narcissism which little Al has plenty of.

First off, Franken wasn't able to drum up enough of an audience to keep Air America financially comfortable. Will he be able to drum up enough money to run a campaign? He can't use Air America as his pulpit..... they'd be liable for in-kind giving over and above the limit.

Second, I hope he does run. The more public these loonies make themselves, the bigger is the percentage of the population that draws back in horror when they see the reality of what they, in their lala land-esoteric-kumbaya view - have supported.

Those people have bought into the abstract concepts of 'peace, love and tolerance' (which sound good) without being exposed to the true face of those who scream or snarl these words through curled lips, with eyes bulging, neck veins distended and spittle flying as they physically attack a fellow American who carries a sign advocating a different view...

The wise person knows they could be next. As the billboards said: "Thanks, Hollywood!"

Al Franken is using the MN Senate race as an excuse to get out of Air America. His radio show doesn't change anyone's mind and he knows it.

What station in Mpls carries Air America? Can't determine what their ratings are from Radio and Records.

How can they call Franken a "comedian"? He is not funny..."""

I've seen him referred to as a "humorist." That's a word for a would-be comedian who has trouble making people laugh.
