I think we should all wish the Iraqis the best while recognizing the future is their's to make for themselves. If they choose a religiously based government, so be it. Mideast Muslims have always marveled at the West's ability for bloodless, democratic changes of government. Unfortunately, Islam has never figured out how do this while attempting to meld democratic principles with its faith. Iraq faces the same struggle. Actually, the greatest hope for success in this challenge may be Iran.

You raise a fair point, IMHO. I certainly would never say that Iraq has assured a democratic future for itself. It will be a rocky road and the future is very much in doubt.

Still, I think it's telling that Couric seems clearly to be hoping for the worst - in her mind, anything is fair game so long as it hurts the hated Republicans.
