S.D. man could have aggressive HIV strain

An unidentified San Diego resident may be infected with the same rare, aggressive and highly drug-resistant strain of HIV found last week in a New York City man who has rapidly become ill with AIDS, health officials said yesterday.

"(The local person's) HIV has a similar molecular makeup as the patient in New York City," said Dr. Nancy Bowen, the San Diego County public health officer who held a press conference about the finding yesterday afternoon in San Diego.

It's important to notify the public about a new and possibly supervigorous strain of HIV so people can take extra precautions, Bowen said. But "I don't think it will do anybody any good to get panicked about this," she said, emphasizing that many details are still being sorted out.

"It can, and it will, get into the heterosexual community"

Yes and it needs to be said that bisexuals, homosexuals, and drug abusers are the ones trasmitting it. If they can yell "SAY NO TO SMOKING" to the young then they need to yell "SAY NO TO SEX". Then maybe it won't be one of our family members. Bisexuals, homosexuals, and drug abusers are a protected class. I'm all for the new 90's saying of love the sinner, hate the sin. But please for the sake of civilization, YELL THE TRUTH.

These guys spread HIV like peanut butter.

OHHHHHH....you just had to say that! I was just ready to head to the kitchen to make a PB&J sandwich. Guess I'll wait on that one.

Where in any of my posts did I deny who was spreading it?
Nowhere.
My bitch was with the gleeful dancing on the graves of those afflicted.
Nothing good can come of it.
My wise old granny once told me - when God lays his hand on someone, you take your off.

HIV studies one year ago "...escaped viruses between people, the team inoculated monkeys with the mutant virus strain."

Nature Medicine
2/16/2004
MADISON-Mutations that allow AIDS viruses to escape detection by the immune system may also hinder the viruses' ability to grow after transmission to new hosts, scientists at the University of Wisconsin-Madison announced this week in the journa of Nature Medicine.

The discovery may help researchers design vaccines that exploit the notorious mutability of HIV by training the immune system to attack the virus where it's most vulnerable. The work appears alongside a study of HIV-infected people performed by scientists at Harvard Medical School and Oxford University. The Wisconsin study's lead author, Thomas Friedrich, is a doctoral student working under the direction of David Watkins, professor of pathology at UW-Madison and senior scientist at the Wisconsin National Primate Research Center.

Watkins' team produced an "escaped" AIDS virus that mimicked events that occur in HIV infection when the virus mutates to become unrecognizable to killer cells known as cytotoxic T-lymphocytes, or CTL. The researchers found that the mutant virus did not grow as well as the original strain. The mutations, while allowing the virus to escape immune recognition, had also weakened the virus. To model the transmission of escaped viruses between people, the team inoculated monkeys with the mutant virus strain. They discovered that most of the escape mutations were lost as the virus grew in the monkeys, often restoring original sequences that killer cells could recognize.

Some scientists have theorized that HIV could adapt to the human immune system as the AIDS epidemic develops, becoming less and less recognizable. Watkins said that his group's findings should help allay these fears.

The UW-Madison group has been studying immunity to AIDS viruses since the early 1990s. Most recently, the researchers have been studying the ways in which viruses mutate to "escape" recognition by the body's killer cells. Killer cells are white blood cells that perform immune "surveillance" throughout the body, detecting infected cells and eliminating them before the virus can spread.

"Over 40 million people are now infected with HIV worldwide, and a vaccine is urgently needed," Watkins said. "We hope that our findings can be used to help design vaccines that show killer cells how to fight the virus most effectively."

You're proud to call yourself a term that is meant to be used in a disparaging manner.

It will burn itself out and not break into the hetro population as stealthily as the original strain did.

3 months is an eternity in the pole smoking crowd. Plenty of time

I am SO sorry for the loss of your Godson.

I took care of many AIDS patients in the early 80's, and like your loved one, some of them had it due to bad transfusions.

It's a horrible, horrible disease, and not a thing I would wish on my worst enemy..

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

There are penty of bi and closeted gay men who could infect hetero women !
Not every gay man is out in the open wiht himself or others.

And it would be nice if everyone waited a couple of years until getting married to have sex, but the modern world doesnt work that way.

It's important for any woman who is sexually active and hasn't known her partner for years to get him tested.
If you have a daughter, sister or female friend who is single and dates make sure they know a new strain of aids may be popping up.

Yes you get it, I hope other people realise that the lines of gay and straight are blurred in Gen X and Gen Y.

Sorry, but be careful before you post things like that.

My Godson died of AIDS in 1984 from a bad blood transfusion he had in 1982. He was 22,straight,and had an accident requiring surgery. This was in San Franciso.
>>>>>

Hey Mears,

I totally feel your pain.
My little cousin was hemophiliac and got a bad blood transfusion.
He died at age 10 from AIDS.

One of my mom's best friends was married to one of the most straight seeming guys and yet he was secretly Bi and passed HIV on to her.
She died recently.

It drives me bat sh@te crazy when people lump AIDS into one group and have zero sympathy.

You tell us to "love the sinner".
You also say to "have compassion".
MY Lord didn't waste a lot of "compassion" on folks who harmed others..
Such as the moneychangers, the Pharisees, etc.
When HE was swinging that whip and kickin' things over in the temple, I doubt if that would pass your "compassionate" test.
Also, HE used some rather politically incorrect words to describe the leaders of THE TOP church of HIS day, who were into self-worship.
He also told HIS disciples to not cast their "pearls" before swine. Seems to me that we are to practice discernment>

Mt 7:1-5

1 Judge not, that ye be not judged.

2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

3 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

4 Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye?

5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

I'll let someone else do the loving at least until the homo-perverts abandon their behavior.

You confuse love of the person for love of their activity...

Just out of curiosity, would you "love" someone who raped your child and gave them HIV?

I dont really know, I know I should love them. It is my sin that nailed Jesus to the cross and I hope when the time comes he intervenes for me..

"My Godson died of AIDS in 1984 from a bad blood transfusion he had in 1982."

I'm very sorry to hear that. Your Godson is the reason that we should ALL be concerned about this. There are plenty of examples showing innocents that were infected and killed by this disease. Babies, unsuspecting wives and female lovers. Those in the health professions. Good Golly, it amazes me that this isn't Front Page News each and every day! This is one situation where being "PC" is a Death Warrant for us all.

On another site, we have a chat going about quarantining these careless disease spreaders to keep this OUT of the general population. How do you feel about that? (Remember the trouble they had getting 'Typhoid Mary' to cooperate with the authorities?)

Before you answer, read up on the history of quarantine, care of the Center for Disease Control. Maybe we need to start e-mailing them en mass?

http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dq/history.htm

"While sporadic attempts were made to impose quarantine requirements, it was the continued yellow fever epidemics that led to the passage of Federal Quarantine Legislation by Congress in 1878. This legislation, while not conflicting with States' rights, paved the way for Federal involvement in quarantine activities. With the arrival of cholera from abroad in 1892, the law was reinterpreted to allow the Federal Government more authority in imposing quarantine requirements. In 1893, another act of Congress further clarified the Federal role in quarantine activities. Local quarantine stations were gradually turned over to the government as local authorities came to realize the benefits of Federal involvement. Additional facilities were built to provide better coverage, and quarantine was nationalized. By 1921, all quarantine stations were under Federal control. In 1944, with codification of the Public Health Service Act, the Federal Government's quarantine authority was clearly established for the first time."
