Senator Arlen Specters office just announced the senator has been diagnosed with Hodgkins disease. From the release:
Senator Specter had experienced persistent fevers and enlarged lymph nodes under his left arm and above his left clavicle. He received testing on February 14th at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. The testing involved biopsy of a lymph node and biopsy of bone marrow. The lymph node was positive for Hodgkins disease. The bone marrow biopsy showed no cancer. A follow up PET scan and MRI at the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania on February 16th established that Senator Specter has stage IVB Hodgkins disease.

Specter damn well better fill out his 6 year term we just elected him to, or else Ed Rendell will get to make Hoeffel his replacement if he resigns or dies. As a Pennsylvanian, I was dismayed as the Republican establishment including my hero, Dubya, backed liberal Specter over conservative Rep. Pat Toomey, who I thought was a better choice.
Yes.
You just couldn't be civil for one minute, could you?
Shame on you.
You bet he does, but there will be an election in November 2006-the replacement serves not 6 years, but until the next regular election.
Don't you have a Planned Parenthood clinic to blow up somewhere?
You are a fanatic.
Maybe he'll be one of the lucky ones that makes it. I certainly hope so. Penna has too many dems holding office.
I don't think so. I think his was non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Not at his age it don't. Hodgkin's Disease is more common in younger age groups, from which that favorable survival statistic is reported. It must surely be lower in Septuagenarians like Spector (RINO-PA).
Even if Specter resigned/died and we had a special election in '06, I'm still not happy about it. We need to focus our efforts to defend Santorum in '06! In a state that's going more and more Democratic, this could be a double-defeat.
So BOTH PA seats would be up at the same time?...That's very interesting..Toomey, where are you?
Age is always a factor. However, that first study you linked, refers to a poorer prognosis "due to associated diseases.", also common in the elderly. His M.D. seems to think he's in good health, so that's certainly a big plus.
This wouldn't be the first time. In 1994, both Senators in Tennessee were up for election and we took both of them.
I pray he gets the best medical attention Scotland has. I figure that since their law is so great, he would want to get the latest Hoggis Hodgkins treatment.
If he does beat it, maybe he will mellow a bit.
This isn't the cancer, thankfully, that Jackie Kennedy had, which is much more serious. She had non-Hodkins Lymphoma.
I don't know what level this cancer is that Arlen has, but my brother had it years ago and made a full recovery and I will pray that he does as well.
Maybe all of this will make Specter more favorable to the Doctors instead of the Tril-lawyers and will support medical malpractice reform.
He seems old for Hodgkins. I was diagnosed with Hodgkins when I was 19. It wasn't fun, but I survived. It's been over 20 years now. Most of the people who were being treated at the hospital I was at were also young. I've never met anyone old who had Hodgkins (unless it was a relapse). I hope he receives the best possible treatment. It makes all the difference in the world.
Hatch - can't have it because of term limits
Grassley - doesn't want it because of Finance chair
Kyl - would probably get it.
None of this would matter if Mark Schweiker decided to run for re-election as Governor in '02. He would have kicked Ed Rendell's fat butt.
Kyl is a great option !!! Thanks .. I love how much wonderful info we can get here at FR.
