I have to agree. In all seriousness, this is a damaged man, who is all the more dangerous because he apparently doesn't realize how impaired he really is.
He doesn't belong within shouting distance of executive power, at any level. The senate is a relatively safe harbor for him, but he should not have security clearance at this point and should not be assigned to sensitive committees like Armed Services. His judgment is no better than Leaky Leahy's; having been a POW and a mediocre pilot gives him no special insight into military matters at the strategic level.
I've always thought that of him as well. It's like he injected steroids into his brain or something...
