DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- A police officer fatally shot a 16-year-old boy outside a high school dance who was driving his car recklessly on campus grounds, officials said.

Jerrod Miller, a sophomore at Olympic Heights High School, died after he was shot about 9 p.m. outside a dance at another school, Delray Full Service Center, The Palm Beach Post reported.

Miller dropped off other kids at the dance and left, Delray Beach police said.

Then he returned and drove through the campus and its outdoor corridors, police said. Students were dodging his car.

An officer fired a shot in an attempt to stop the car, police said.

Relatives said Miller was a good kid who checked up on his grandmother and stayed off the streets.

''He wasn't that kind of kid. He was a good kid,'' said family spokeswoman Joelle Cornelius.

Delray Full Service Center is an alternative school for students with discipline problems.

Sunday morning, painted yellow lines marked the car's tire tracks and a small splatter of blood, scraped paint, and tire marks remained on the hallway wall.

Police declined to identify the officer or release additional information. A spokesman didn't return a phone message and page from The Associated Press.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

I know where I live, the cops are NEVER allowed to use deadly force against an automoblie UNLESS there is deadly force being used by the driver of the car BY SOME MEANS OTHER THAN THE CAR.

Well, thats a bad rule. If you tried to stop a Ryder truck and the driver refused and it left the roadway and headed directly toward a government building with a daycare center in it....would you obey that rule?

thin blue line

An anachronism if there ever were one. More like blue suited tax collectors/part time protectors.

''He wasn't that kind of kid."

LOL! Apparently he was exactly that kind of kid. Either that or Helen Keller took over the wheel.

"Any cop that can't disarm a 16 year old boy without shooting shouldn't be on the force."

Go back one and see where the quote came from...

The Delray Full Service Center enrolls about 165 middle- and high-schoolers with behavior problems.

Only if I knew there was a bomb in the back of the truck and the driver was about to use it. But again, if I shot at the truck and it turned out there was nothing in the truck, the department would not indemnify me and I would at least be out of a job and most likely in jail.

" but the article clearly states that the two officers were persuing the car on foot."

That should be "but the article clearly states that two officers were persuing the car on foot.

From the maps that was posted, I could imagine another officer either further in the structure amongst the children, or down the alley were the kid drove by. We know fo two at the door, but that does not mean the press is being completely honest with us.

No, I did not side with Janet Reno. When the facts came out, it was clear Reno acted in an irresponsible way. However, that has nothing to do with this case.

You must side with race baiters like Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson, yelling "No justice, no peace" when some law breaker gets capped for putting the lives of others in danger.

So go ahead, hating the cops, and smashing the local Starbucks at the next street rally.

That must be a penumbra of an emanation of an officer... or some imagaginary claptrap like that.

That crap is real weak man.

Once you shoot and kill the driver, aka good kid, the car will come to a stop eventually.

From the link:

According to state records, Miller did not have a driver license and he had no criminal record.

Guess the kid thought running from the cop was better than getting a ticket for driving w/o a license.

A police officer fatally shot a 16-year-old boy outside a high school dance

That must have put a damper on the party. These kids bought dresses, rented tuxes, picked out corsages all in anticipation of having a special night. Then someone comes along and ruins it for everyone. When this boy's parents file their wrongful death suit against the police, all of the dance's participants should file small claims cases against the parents asking for reimbursement for the money they spent getting ready for the dance.

You ID a teenager in a car and think... 9-11? Is that the only reference most people have anymore, 9-11?

"Look, that lady is jaywalking!"

BAM! BAM! BAM!

"Officer Tackleberry, What is the meaning of this?"

"Sorry Mahoney, it's just... 9-11."

"Understood. Keep up the good work."

Well if it did, then I'm sure the streets would be running with the blood of police officers instead of the great number of non-perp civilians.

Whatever, indeed.

10 most dangerous jobs/fatalities per 100,000:
Timber cutters 117.8
Fishers 71.1
Pilots and navigators 69.8
Structural metal workers 58.2
Drivers-sales workers 37.9
Roofers 37
Electrical power installers 32.5
Farm occupations 28
Construction laborers 27.7
Truck drivers 25

Gee why no cops?

Ok, show me where witnesses state plainly that it was only two officers on the entire campus. If you can convince me that the press was being entirely honest and you weren't only assuming, I will proclaim my theory as "weak"

Beyond a reasonable doubt, my friend.

It's time for someone to pipe up that "Any cop that can't disarm a 16 year old boy without shooting shouldn't be on the force."

It's time to take away badges and guns from any LEO who is not a sheriff or sheriff's deputy.Let the sheriffs handle the hard work. The police should help little old ladies cross the street and take the keys away from drunk drivers(not send them to jail).Protect and serve. We have let our local police forces become our prison guards.

Does it ever amaze you that whenever the police shoot a teenager, he's always described as a "good kid" or an "honor student"?

Yes, they were driving a stolen vehicle backwards into people or driving like a drunk into a crowd but, still, the good kid honor student shouldn't have been killed by those mean old cops.

Either our schools now have low moral standards or there are folks lying their asses off about the newly departed.
