NY Punk Venue CBGB Faces Closure Over Unpaid Rent

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York's legendary rock club CBGB, which helped launch everybody from Blondie to the Ramones, faces closure if it does not resolve a dispute over unpaid rent with the homeless charity that owns the building.

Club owner Hilly Kristal said the dispute dated from 2001, when the landlord presented a $300,000 bill for unpaid rent.

Though most of that has now been repaid, the club was handed another bill earlier this year for $76,000 which CBGB has not paid. The club's lease comes to an end in August and talks on renewal are stalled.

"The real thing is they don't want me back," Kristal said, adding that there had been a series of disagreements over renovations and building certificates in recent years.

CBGB, which stands for "country, bluegrass and blues" even though it is most famous for punk music, rents its downtown space from the Bowery Residents' Committee -- a non-profit organization that runs a homeless shelter above the premises.

"I am not going to subsidize CBGB at the expense of homeless people," Muzzy Rosenblatt, executive director for the organization, was quoted as saying in The New York Times.

MTV's Web site quoted him as saying CBGB had not met its obligations on safety.

The Committee wants to double the rent and negotiations over a new lease have ground to a halt amid legal wrangling that will result in a court hearing later this month.

Kristal, who founded the club in 1973, converting what had been a Hell's Angels hangout into one of the most famous venues for live music in the city, said he would fight closure of what he called a New York City institution.

"We've established something here. ... This is a kind of symbol of helping young musicians and new artists," he said, recalling early gigs by the likes of Pearl Jam.

"I think we do a nice thing for a lot of people; maybe it's not quite as wonderful as helping the homeless but it has its benefits," Kristal said.

Rosenblatt could be immediately reached for comment.

I'm probably the only one here who remembers the Lismar Lounge.

I've always found it hysterical that my FATHER actually went to both Studio 54 and the Limelight with business associates. My dad is too Cheney-esque for that scene.

My aunt was a regular at Max's back in the early 70s, the only place that appreciated British glitter rock.

As a life long NYC musician I can tell you that the music scene in NYC is DARD. This is just the final nail in the coffin. The etown is over run with Hip Hop bulls^it discos and crack heads. Except for Bleecker st there are hardly and LIVE venues left in town Our "wonderfull" mayor decided that cigaretts are not allowed in clube so that hut an already hurting business. What a shame this all is .I've had some of the best gigs and times at CB's over the years .

Hard to believe that NYC was a great Rock and Roll town until about 15 years ago.

I think, however, that it simply reflects a change in musical tastes. There aren't any grunge clubs here in Seattle, after all and only two rather small clubs that have live bands. I happen to like electronica/techno and much of the Latin sound (merengue and samba/neoBossa Nova, not that Bachato sh-t the Doms like to blast out of their apartments). Hip-hop on the other hand needs to go.

Well, I guess its time to put on Rocket to Russia or The Dictators.

NY STOPPED being a rock n roll town 15 years ago..Been on the fast decline ever since..There used to be a scene , a vERY cool , musical , creative scene. Musicians could actually make a few buck s on top of it.Now the clubs all want FREE bands . The few good places left are Kenny's, Terra Blues and The Bitter End on Bleecker . The rest of the city's gone to hell.Bloomberg has a lot to do with the decline of live music too. He sucks to put it bluntly.Last summer he had the cops raid Bleecker st for weeks , shutting down clubs for noise, crouds, cigaretts , anything they could bust them on. The reality is he wants to have condos built on the block .More $$$ for him .

Café Wha was a joke. A basement dump with a legitimate claim to fame that Jimi Hendrix got a career boost there. James Taylor's friends the "Flying Machine" (Danny Kortchmar) were often there. I never even set foot in it. Only place I patronized, and have fond memories of, was the Café Au Go Go where the Blues Project was the unofficial house band. Also the Anderson Theater which became the Filmore East. Saw the last incarnation of Yardbirds there with Jimmy Page using a violin bow on his guitar. Saw Hendrix too stoned to the gills on LSD it seemed. 3 times he played the opening riffs of Cream's "Sunshine of Your Love" as a goof. Yuk yuk yuk
