You know, if that had been the only bogus report in his entire career, it would still have been sufficiently bad to constitute his epitaph.
But the truth is, all through his career he doctored news stories. He can hardly be remembered as a truth teller.

Your point about his
spinning or doctoring of news over an entire career is confirmed by what I have seen. There is a very nice example documented in
Stolen Valor that gave me revulsion for his actions against Vietnam era military men and how they were portrayed for the last four decades. He takes Rather's actions in some specific investigative reports to task and really reveals his tactics.
