North Korea warns US-S Korean military drill could result in "actual war"

SEOUL - North Korea warned on Sunday that annual US-South Korean military exercises due to start this week and designed to deter any military threat from the Stalinist country could turn into “an actual war”.

The North’s cabinet newspaper, Minju Joson, said the week-long military maneuvers beginning on March 19 in South Korea should be called off.

“There is no guarantee that the large-scale joint military exercises will not go over to an actual war,” Minju Joson said in a commentary carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.

“The US and the South Korean authorities should immediately cancel their plan for the provocative joint military exercises against (North Korea).”

The commentary said North Koreans would “wipe out all the aggressors” in the event of war.

Officials in Seoul and Washington have said the military drills are “purely defensive” and intended to check on the state of the US-South Korean military alliance.

The exercises come amid new diplomatic efforts to bring Pyongyang back into six-nation talks aimed at persuading it give up its nuclear weapons program.

They involve some of the US troops based here, thousands of US soldiers from abroad and South Korean military contingents.

The drills include mock battles aimed at evaluating command capabilities with troops mobilized for anti-commando operations and computer war games.

The USS Kitty Hawk, a US aircraft carrier based in Japan, will arrive in South Korea’s southern port of Busan Monday for the exercises, the US military newspaper Stars and Stripes said Sunday.

Some 32,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea to help deter possible aggression from communist North Korea.

About 650,000 South Korean troops have been stationed against North Korea’s 1.1-million-strong army on the Korean peninsula since the 1950-1953 Korean War.

They say that every time this exercise is going to happen. Truth is that one aircraft carrier scares the living begeezus out of them.

In the sick Mind of very Ill Jung drills that include mock battles aimed at evaluating command capabilities with troops mobilized for anti-commando operations and computer war games risks war. Apparently when North Korea fires a Long-Range Dong across the Sea of Japan and over the Japanese mainland we shouldn't be concerned because it's just a harmless NK war game.

Well, if there's going to be a war out of this, we should be in a pretty good position...

For awhile, the South Koreans were sending balloons with hand-crank radios attached up to the North. Then they got intimidated out of that. I think they should send radios, walkie-talkies, food, anything to help the people in the north. Mr Il is going to fall one day by coup, by his family or by disease.

"I'm glad these maneuvers make them nervous. That's what they're designed to do." I agree. I don't want it to happen though if North Korea wants the fight I think they will get more than they want. I know that they have an lot of fire power. Remember those Arleigh Burkes are there too and have been for a while. God Bless our people tht are there and they are in my prayers. God Bless America and all who defend Her.

We ought to accidentally lob a cruise missile at NK just to see what they would do.

Just out of curiosity, how many times a month does the 'ronery' one threaten war? Methinks little Kimmy Il needs to take his Prozac.

The name escapes me too but it was commanded by Commander Lloyd M. Bucher, and it was relatively small unarmed vessel designed to sit just out side the national water boundary in international waters and electronically eavesdrop on everything they were doing; from radars to telephone conversations.

Re #31

It's USS Pueblo. They towed it to Pyongyang and had put it on display. You can still see it today if you go to Pyongyang. Something U.S.N may have to take back once China Fruit is gone.

this should be taken seriously,

Every year, west-pac marines play war games in S. Korea and every year N. Korea spouts off; louder when it is advantageous to them.

I'd notice if NK didn't say anything about the excercise this year.

Take back hell! I much prefer a more direct insult. Like a salvo of enough exocet missile skimming to target to make it nothing more than refrigerators magnets blown everywhere near the harbor.

I meant Exocet because maybe we can con the Frogs into playing in a naval exercise and firing in a safe range in the vicinity Exocet missiles and...... see where I'm going?

We get the sweet taste of revenge and leave Chia-Pervert with no viable proof of who did it or how other than pointing a conjecture of Frogs in the area firing Excocets and it was by what little forensic evidence they could find an Exocet the caused the detonations.

The North Korean lunatics have been bitching about these annual exercises for decades. Occaisionally we call one off when it seems the NKs might genuinely go off their rockers.

Let 'em bitch.

We should've destroyed the Pueblo the week after it was taken.

Oh, we might start in a good position, but one nuke in the harbor could turn that around in a hurry.

I participated in two Team Spirit exercises in The 80's and this is basically what the N. Koreans always said then. Well, as a good will gesture to peace talks we stopped having Team Spirit exercises. Allot of good that did!
