Ping. This is NOT good for the Republicans. They've ben taken for a serious ride, and the results will be ugly. This morning, I talked to several VERY conservative Sailors who are actually so appalled at this, they are writing their congresscritters to complain about it. Seems they're QUITE angry that the federal government has all this time on its hands to worry about an individual issue when we're having trouble getting airplanes to fly. More than one has sworn to change their party registration to "independant" or "libertarian" over it.

The Congress has seriously overreached itself. Once more facts become known, and the wild hyperbole, conspiracy theories, and propaganda die down, there will be a LOT of embarassed lawmakers scrambling to recover.

The GOP is facing a huge fight within itself because of this.

It's a flash-in-the-pan, early in the administration.

Yeah, they will. It was coming sooner or late over some sort of cultural issue.

The culture war has been a loser for the GOP.

Gotta disagree with you there. This is actually VERY good for Republicans. For one, its the right thing to do. The rights to life is a core value for the GOP.

Secondly, there is a reason why very little opposition has come from the democrats - and that is because this is a losing issue for them. Someone realized in the senatet that its not good to clamor over one another in order to be the first one to kill a handicapped person.

All of my neighbors but two are upset about this and I just got back from the gym and Mr. Peach and I got in a discussion with another guy and he and his wife are upset as well.

Now a friend from CT just called and she's not pleased and I haven't even opened my e-mail yet.

Most of these people haven't spoken specifically about the Terri Schiavo case and how they feel about her but rather the broader implications for how this will affect family and hospital decisions that are made thousands of times a day across the country.

Indeed. After demonstrating that they can get a controversial bill drafted, passed, and ready for Dubya's signature in a weekend -- if they really want to -- they are going to be big-red-capital-Superman-S screwed if they don't get satisfactory results on tax/spending cuts, Social Security reform, et cetera.
