Is Juvenile Violent Crime An Epidemic?

Fact-o-rama

The incidence of homicide, aggravated assault, rape and robbery committed by juveniles is tracked by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS).

Data for 2002, the most recent year available, shows that juveniles aged 12 to 17 were involved in 278 thousand serious violent crimes. But that number is way down from the 1 million, 108 thousand serious violent crimes committed by juveniles in 1993. In fact, the 2002 figure is the lowest for the period involving 1980 to 2002.

So as the juvenile population increases the number of crimes is going way down? Sounds like today's "whippersnappers" ain't quite as bad as everyone makes them out to be.

The answer is yes. I was an eighth grader when Columbine happened. Since I was on the low end of the totem pole, me and most of my compatriates spent the next week in the counselor's office. They wanted to make sure we didn't go off the deep end. We would cry and complain, and they'd keep us out of class longer. Everybody wins. We don't have to be near the people we hate, and the counselor's feel they're helping somebody.

The best thing to do was to cite the golden rule. Then act like you were going to apply the converse (I think that's what it's called). Anyway, just say I'll treat them as I've been treated. Ooooooh, that'd occupy them for hours.

What they've failed to disclose is that the "new" numbers - are for juveniles ages 5-11...

The thing I never got was this. They knew we were being tortured, day in and day out. They what we were being driven to do, but they never stopped the problem at the source. They never punished them. That's why kids flip, becuase no one else will. It's been a long time and I still haven't forgiven them and their kind. Honestly, if I got invited to a ten year reunion, I don't know what I'd do. If something keeps me out of heaven, it's that resentment.
