Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain

BY BOB LAMENDOLA

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (KRT) - Scans of Terri Schiavo's brain show that the great majority of her gray matter where thinking and feeling occur has died off and been replaced by watery fluid, with no chance of growing back, neurologists said.

About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists who viewed 12 of her CT "computed tomography" X-ray scans Tuesday and Wednesday.

"This is as severe brain damage as I've ever seen," said Dr. Leon Prockop, a professor and former chairman of neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, upon viewing the scans.

That is truly repulsive, using the proceeds of the malpractice case to pay the lawyer tyring to kill her.

Really sick.

Uh, dude, Greer authorized that more than $300,000 of Terri's rehab funds be paid to Felos in his valiant effort to have her put down. Be careful what you try with numbers.

What are you disputing? Michael did get separate award of $300,000 and that had nothing to do with Greer. Greer may have had Felos paid $300,000 but it came out of the $750,000 that Terri was awarded and only about $40,000 of that money is left. So what are you disputing?

Given the "15 years", why not re-examine now, before she is offed?

Some neurologists are saying they belive she is not in the PVS. Are they liars or incompetent? How do you know?

a PET would show areas lighting up in response to stimuli. It shows in living color the function or working of the brain. The others are nthing more than anatomy and anatomy is not destiny!

I have seen scans as bad as hers in people walking around and talking. You cannot extrapolate from an anatomical study to what is going on functionally.

That is why the PET is the gold standard.

"Why don't we re-examine her with current technology and find out definitively, rather than relying on 1996 scans that are outdated?"

You think humans are capable of regenerating brains?

Ask them to explain how a person with an almost non-exitant brain can lead a normal life. They don't know, yet it happens.

And yet they insist on branding people with diagnoses based on incomplete testing and then insist that the tests must be believed over the patients observed behaviors. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Health care by judicial fiat. ENJOY

Your the one thats saying shes aware and ready to perform a miracle and hop up and run down to the mall.

Please find the quote where I suggested anything close to that. My mother in law can't jump up and run down to the mall but I'll let her live.

If shes aware like you say, then shes suffering.

How do you know that?

Show her the same respect you would for an animal

It's a crime to knowingly starve an animal. Unknowingly it's called neglect.

. . .and let her go gently into that sweet night. You are for postponing her relief though.

? ? ? ? ?

I bet you wouldn't let your spouse suffer like that - if you have one.

My mother had a stroke and heart attack last May. She was on a ventilator. She also had emphysema. After she finally regained some conciseness she wanted to come off the ventilator. We told her that the consequence of that would be that she would likely not be able to breathe for any length of time. She understood, and said she did not want to go back on it in any case. My brothers and sisters all agreed that we would have to all be in agreement about what to do when the time came. We were and we honored her wishes. There IS a reasonable doubt as to whether Terri Schindler wanted this. I am not convinced (not that that has any bearing on what to do), but most who knew her are not convinced that this is what she wanted either. Let's allow her parents be sure, OK?

Now go get another glass of water.

"why dont we drag it out for 500 more years until we get the technology to fix it?"

That's the plan.

You know what is more repulsive?

Michaels award was for "loss of consortium" which he remedied pretty fast complete with children and a house. He didn't suffer loss of consortium long. In fact his loss funded his new domestic situation.

And she has to die because in a divorce she would get half of their community property and he might have to give up his Benz. And she could use the money now for her care.

The man is slime, I tell you, slime.

This doctor must re-learn what in fact a PET scan does. First of all a PET uses tagged glucose to measure uptake in the brain.

You're claiming that the DCF neurologist doesn't know what a PET scan does? Based on what?

your guy, spent 45 minutes with her

Guardian Ad Litem Wolfson spent 20 days with Terri and couldnt find any consistent signs from her that her movements or noises were anything but random. But of course he was on the take too, right? Even though Schivao was challenging his apppointment.

Could the PET scan be done with whatever device has been put in her brain?

I have heard that the MRI cannot be done because of it, but I was not sure about the PET scan.

"It was her sister, I believe, who testifed that Terri said words to the effect, referring specifically to the Karen Quinlan case, "where there is life, there is hope".

It was Terri's friend, Diane Meyer:

"Terri's best friend, Diane Meyer, recalled they had just seen a television movie about Karen Ann Quinland. Terri, wondering how the doctors and lawyers could possibly know what Quinland was really feeling or what she would want, said, "Where there's life, there's hope."

"She's in a hospice facility.

They're expensive."

No kidding, can you tell me what the justification is for $80K per month?

Why don't we let the neurologists who are not hired guns for one side determine that?

But if a patient wants to end extraordinary measures I have no problem withholding all treatment.

Herein lies our dilemma. Let's be absolutely sure that this patient wanted that. There is good cause to have reasonable doubt. We can agree to end extraordinary measure in this case. Let's just do the basics, food and water.

And why don't we all calm down, and go get a refreshing glass of water.

why not re-examine now, before she is offed?

They could give her a pet scan without reinserting her feeding tube.

And he explained on tv tonight why they were not done. To have accepted Guardians recommendation would have weakened Michaels case that the Guardians appointment was unconstitutional. Micheal won that case.

Which simply proves our point. Michael was not interested in rehabbing Terri, he was interested in putting her down.

It has been driving me nuts why there isn't a way that Terri could be allowed to divorce him.....
