Neurologists see little sign of activity in Schiavo's brain

BY BOB LAMENDOLA

South Florida Sun-Sentinel

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (KRT) - Scans of Terri Schiavo's brain show that the great majority of her gray matter where thinking and feeling occur has died off and been replaced by watery fluid, with no chance of growing back, neurologists said.

About 70 to 90 percent of Schiavo's upper brain is gone, and there's also damage to her lower brain that controls instinctive functions like breathing and swallowing, said three Florida neurologists who viewed 12 of her CT "computed tomography" X-ray scans Tuesday and Wednesday.

"This is as severe brain damage as I've ever seen," said Dr. Leon Prockop, a professor and former chairman of neurology at the University of South Florida College of Medicine in Tampa, upon viewing the scans.

Which simply proves our point. Michael was not interested in rehabbing Terri, he was interested in putting her down.

Swallow tests would have nothing to do with rehabbing.

The bloodlust of some here is really scary.

What a dopey remark! We're having a discussion, and you're hurling insults like a school boy.

"Please you flatter yourself without cause. Hubris is never attractive, but when it's completely delusional it's all the uglier."

What specifically are you talking about?

Yes this has been another one of the Medicaid frauds perpetrated on us by MS. Wasn't Felos on the Board of Diretors of the Hospice ? There is so much conflict of interest in allowed in Florida.

BTW, he didnt give her a neurological examination. He watched the video and sat with her for a while

Like the poster said, she may be in a lower conscious state rather than PVS.

So he hasn't seen her, why not let him. Oh, and maybe Judge Greer should FINALLY see her too.

Now relax and go get a refreshing drink of water.

Guardian Ad Litem Wolfson spent 20 days with Terri and couldnt find any consistent signs from her that her movements or noises were anything but random. But of course he was on the take too, right? Even though Schivao was challenging his apppointment.

Three nurses spent a combined three and a half years with her and they testified that Terri Schiavo was conscious at a low level.

I have a lot of faith in nurses, they've taken excellent care of me and my wife when we've been in various intensive care units. Not so much faith in lawyers making medical diagnoses.

You agree, right?

"Greer may have had Felos paid $300,000 but it came out of the $750,000 that Terri was awarded .." Somehow, I didn't think that would bother you. You don't disappoint.

Question, Doc:

Given the extensive loss of brain tissue, would you expect some portion of the EEG to show no activity? Flat line, if you prefer...

Thanks!

"The experts say, though, that the CT is not nearly as accurate as the MRI, and there is no MRI in this case because the judge refused to order one."

Are you saying an MRI will show the liquid that has replaced her brain more accurately than the CT?

You want to reconsider that statement Dave?

Does an expert witness ever produce an unfavorable examination?

The only expert witness allowed to testify were St. Michael's expert witnesses.

Hello Keeley, I remember your father's case well. I for one am glad to see you on this forum. You can certainly provide a perspective that not many people (thankfully) have.

My condolences on the loss of your dad.

Simple question. Are you simply ignorant of what her scans show or do you like to propagate the medias imitation of Josef Goebells?

a PET would show areas lighting up in response to stimuli. It shows in living color the function or working of the brain. The others are nthing more than anatomy and anatomy is not destiny!

Yes, I know. I was just interested in what msuMD thought was wrong with the statements about PET scanning in the affidavit. I didn't see anyting wrong.

I'm a neurologist and have seen thousands of CT scans and I have to say I've also seen lots of elderly people walking and talking who have that amount of brain volume. But that's a little misleading. In Terri's scan, the occipital lobes and parts of the parietal lobes are totally destroyed with no recognizable structure. I can't say I've ever seen anyone walking around like that.

In her case, any structural imaging is irrelevant. If you don't see cortex, that doesn't mean it's not there. If you do, that doesn't mean it's functioning. The recent affidavit is the strongest argument that she is in a minimally conscious state rather than a PVS.

No, swallowing has to do with living.

PET and MRI can measure functionality. If she lights up the cortex with external stimulus, somethings going on in there, no?
