Money for Terri Went to Attorneys, Michael

According to the Associated Press, Michael Schiavo sued medical professionals who he said failed to recognize symptoms that caused his wife's heart to stop beating, causing her brain damage. As a result, he won a $1.2 million settlement. At the time, Michael sought the funds with the promise to use the money for Terri Schiavo's care and rehabilitation. As part of the settlement, Michael Schiavo received $300,000, the rest being earmarked for Terri's care and rehabilitation. His attorneys say today most of the money designated for Terri is gone, spent on her care and legal bills. One of his lawyers, Deborah Bushnell, told the AP that more than half of the $700,000 designated from the malpractice award for Terri's care has been spent for that purpose, with the rest going toward litigation. But that statement is at odds with records that show that lawyers - not medical care - ate up most of the expenditures and have been paid directly from Terri's Medical Trust fund, with the approval of Judge George Greer: Here’s where most of the money went:

Atty. Gwyneth Stanley - $10,668.05 Atty. Deborah Bushnell - $65,607.00 Atty. Steve Nilson - $7,404.95 Atty. Pacarek - $1,500.00 Atty. Richard Pearse (GAL) - $4,511.95 Atty. George Felos - $397,249.99 Other - 1st Union/South Trust Bank – $55,459.85 Michael Schiavo - $10,929.95 Total: $545,852.34

These funds, the result of a malpractice suit, were meant solely to provide for Terri Schiavo’s care and rehabilitation, not to pay lawyers to help Michael Schiavo kill his wife. Schiavo’s primary attorney, George Felos, a professional advocate of mercy killing, has received upwards of $400,000 dollars since Schiavo hired him. This same attorney, at the expense of Terri’s medical fund, publicly likened Terri to a "houseplant" and has used Terri’s case on national television to promote his newly published book.

It has been reported in the news ( I saw it on MSNBC when they were talking about the poor girl) that there is an insurance policy.

But take that with a grain of salt...because the MSM is not the most accurate group out there.

Regardless. The mispending of the care trust. Michael Shiavo's lawyer being on the board of the hospice...and now word that there may be an issue of judges, including the main one, having investments in a group that devlopes hospices.....

AND THE IDEA OF AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MATTER SEEMS VERY REASONABLE.

No update MRIs allowed. No real feeding attempts. No videos allowed. No therapy attempts allowed.

Judge rules in favor for the husband...based only on his hearsay.

Judge won't allow follow up evaluation by other neurosurgions who state that the first diagnosis was off.

There needs to be an investigation.

Yes it would. Along with the issue of the campaign donations.

The refusal of the judge to allow other well respected neurosurgions to evaluate the poor girl.

No updated MRI's allowed. No video or pictures allowed.
No real feeding attempts allowed. No therapy allowed.

There is plenty of ways for the parents to go with a civil suit against the judge, michael shiavo, the hospice, and the lawyers.

Just like those folks who sued OJ.

Micheal's own lawyer was on the hospice board. And now word is out there that judges may have had investments in a developement group for hospices.

There is a lot of crooked things going on in this case.

The judge has been doing everything he can to not allow outside evaluation. He is trying to cover micheal shiavo's and his own a--.

Someone on Fox News last week said that the hospice has been footing the bill for Terri's care, but wouldn't Medicare and her Social Security disability be used for her care as well? My oldest sister is in a nursing home and her disability check goes directly to the home for her care and needs.

Proof? Did you talk to John Edwards? Did he channel Mrs. Schiavo for you and tell you all this? No. Okay then.

That's your case shot to heck. Next...

They haven't contacted them, because it doesn't make any difference what they think.

I sense the outrage. It just doesn't make rational sense, as outrage usually doesn't. It's selfish drivel.

My bad. She's had the mental capacity of a carrot and no reasonable possibility of recovery for 15 years.

I stand corrected, but I'm still correct.

Um, no. Brain death is absence of consciousness and higher-level brain activity. Brain dead people still have autonomic nervous system and other basic life functions, like breathing, excreting and heartbeat. They just subsist on the most basic level of life, and that's it. Brains don't regenerate.

THAT'S the fact.

Go back to school, and let the grown-ups talk some more.

Actually, I keep a lot of illegal Mexicans employed at a nearby restaurant. I don't turn them in, even though I know for a fact they are illegals.

I saved my neighbor's cat from a tree last week.

I am teaching my roommate to play poker.

I educate people like you. Well, I try.

I work and pay taxes.

I vote.

I fund my own life and pay my own medical insurance.

I was also bright enough to have drafted a living will a few years ago.

How about them apples, Sunshine?

Your turn.

You go ahead with your belief that Terri is brain-dead. No one will stop you. You have said even if you are wrong, you think you are right. I wish to thank you because you have saved me any time I would have spent posting to you, trying to discuss the issues of this case, or thread.

Your mind is totally made up, so if you are not here to discuss, debate, keep an open-mind, learn something new, then you must be here to dictate your opinion.

So, go ahead. And Thanks.

They were never legally entitled to see her medical records. That's why. All that privacy business. You know? Mommy and Daddy weren't her guardians. Mrs. Schiavo was "Mrs. SCHIAVO", not "Miss SCHINDLER".

Michael Schiavo may be a piece of garbage, but that's not the issue. The issue is "Who was legally Mrs. Schiavo's guardian?" and the answer isn't "Mom and Dad".

Life's tough. Wear a helmet.

Separation of Powers. Jeb can't step in. The legislature has to, and that process involves a timeline that will not be short enough to save Mrs. Schiavo.

This case can serve as a lesson, but they can't save her, not legally. If the executive can change the law on a whim, everyone will need to watch out. What if a Democrat gets elected again? He/she could be empowered by what goes on in this case to do things no one here would want to permit, but the precedent would be set.

And we'd ALL be screwed.

I've talked to John Edwards. He has seen into the future for me, and he says I'm still right. He heard it straight from all them kids he used to talk to.

"Federal judges are not ELECTED. They are APPOINTED."

I never said federal judges were elected.

However, GREER IS NOT A FEDERAL JUDGE - he is a Circuit Court judge - and he WAS JUST RE-ELECTED.

Sheeeeeeesh!!!!
