There's nothing new about this... it's a wild-guess, worst-case scenario, and it wasn't concocted recently either. I know I saw another story on FR about this just a few weeks ago.

When you REALLY worry is when your wife, girlfriend and car payment are all a month late.

The killer meteor will kill us by then........

No need to worry friends, solution is forthcoming. Hillary to anounce plan to prevent killer wave from ever reaching our shores. Requires placing Ted Kennedy in permanent residency at bar on Chappaquidick. More details later.

Thanks, but just a tad too close to the Yellowstone Caldera.

If that sucker ever goes, the entire North American continent will be too close to it.

"Thanks, but just a tad too close to the Yellowstone Caldera."

It won't matter. If that super-volcano blows, it'll get everyone in the world. The last one blew (Toba) 74,000 years ago and only 2,000 people world wide survived...it's still detectable in our genes.

If a earthquake like the one that happened circa 1812 would happen today

That's very unlikely; the recurrance time of such quakes is quite a bit longer than 200 years, and it would take much longer to build up that much strain.

There's far to much overhype of things EXCEEDINGLY unlikely to happen in our lifetimes; a Yellowstone full Caldera blast, a La Palma avalanche tsunami, or the 1811-1812 New Madrid Quakes being repeated.

Thing is there are things virtually GUARANTEED to happen in our lifetimes...such as a 6.5-7 magnitude quake somewhere on the New Madrid or Wabash Valley seismic zones....a 7-7.5 quake on the Hayward fault in Oakland/Berkeley, or a similar quake near Salt Lake City, or any of a variety of similar mag quakes near Los Angeles...that would kill thousands of people and do hundreds of billions of dollars worth of damage.

What we should do is build a 55-yard high seawall along the entire eastern seabord. It would make the Great Wall of China look like Jersey barriers by comparison.

"So the Eastern seaboard could be wiped clean by an act of God? I thought He said He wouldn't do that again?

He said he would never destroy the whole world by flood again. The next time He will destroy the world it'll be by fire. But we have at least 1003 years before that. But local floods even the size of the Eastern seaboard, are far from what He promised not to do.

I'd be so sad if anything ever happened to L.A. or San Francisco....

But, my parents live in California!

Remember what Gene Hackman / Lex Luthor said to Valerie Perrine / Miss Teschmacher when she said the same thing? He looked at his watch and said:

"Not anymore."

"What we should do is build a 55-yard high seawall along the entire eastern seabord. It would make the Great Wall of China look like Jersey barriers by comparison."

And if we used the material from the volcano to make the seawall we'd cover two bases with one solution that would only cost several trillion dollars.
