Pope suffered shock & cardio-vascular collapse, is tranquil

The first two items don't go well with the last one. Prayers for John Paul II.

Sky news doesn't have it either - it's on news.yahoo.com, drudgereport, etc. Anything live has it, everything that is sleeping at the switch doesn't.

While we are on the subject, something I was interested in; is the Pope, Pope-for-life or is he able to step down in failing health conditions?

I could be wrong, but I believe the pope can step down for any reason. The question is: What does a year, or a few months, or a few days matter to a 2004 year old institution?

I know--but my very ill, post stroke brother-in-law is recovering from pneumonia and a urinary tract infection. He spent a week in the ICU before he started to recover, so I know how serious this can be.

It is possible for the pope to step down, but not many have. Usually, they serve till death.

Apr 1, 12:32 AM (ET)

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope John Paul's condition was "very grave" on Friday, the Vatican said in a statement, adding that the Pontiff had suffered shock and cardio-circulatory collapse.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the Pope had been given the Holy Viaticum -- communion reserved for those close to death -- and had decided himself not to go to hospital for treatment.

The statement said the Pope had received cardio-respiratory assistance on Thursday and on Friday morning was still "conscious, lucid and tranquil."

May God hold this wonderful man close to Him now and give him peace and strength. May He restore him to health, if that is His will, in Jesus' name.

It brings a tear to my eye to hear that the Pope elected to remain in the Vatican rather than a hospital. Home is where the heart is. The Vatican has been his temporal home for decades and, I presume, if he felt his end was approaching, he wanted to remain right where his heart was and is.

"In my Father's house are many mansions. If it were not so, I would have told you.

"I go to prepare a place for you."

I'm sure a place has been prepared for His Holiness since The Beginning.
