It's a gesture of respect to a head of state. The pope in his secular capacity is the head of state of Vatican City...and is treated on par with any other head of state. That's why flags here are at half-staff too..
Of course, YOU knew that, but our Froggie friends don't....

...leftwingers and a major teaching union... This doesn't require differentiation.

100 years to keep religion from provoking the bloody strife it sparked in previous centuries. If they are referring to the French Revolution, it was those who revolted against the Catholic church that committed the most bloody acts.

Do these petulant "leftwingers and a major teaching union" really understand just how much on the wrong side of the world they are, protesting a thing like this?! No more than a teenager who thinks he knows more than Mom and Dad.

If I was a froggy I'd have a much greater antipathy towards when they did the flag lowering for Hirohito, Hitler's buddy, but since I am not a froggy, I have no clue as to their mindset...

It's bad enough when I'm on the same side as Jesse Jackson and Ralph Nader in the Terri Schiavo case. Now I'm supporting President Chriac's decision about lowering the Tricolour.
I think I've had a psychotic break of some kind. Maybe more coffee will help....

You think you have issues, I'm more Catholic than these Froggies and I'm a Buddhist!
(If I had a flag, I would have lowered it.)
