MSNBC's Chris Matthews: Terri Schiavo's Dad Having "Good Time" by Steven Ertelt LifeNews.com Editor April 1, 2005

New York, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Chris Matthews, the host of the "Hardball" political talk show on MSNBC shocked listeners of the Don Imus radio show yesterday when he claimed Terri Schiavo's father Bob Schindler was having a "good time" as his daughter starved to death.

Just hours before Terri Schiavo succumbed to a thirteen day starvation and dehydration death, Matthews made the comments.

"There's nobody here who looks particularly compelling or attractive," Matthews told Imus on the his program.

"The father seems to be having, I hate to say this, a good time. I don't know why, maybe it's the focus, maybe he's giddy with sadness of the tragedy that has been going on for so long," Matthews said.

One pro-life leader told LifeNews.com the comments were "mean-spirited" and "insensitive" and made with "terrible timing."

However, Bob Schindler has been grieving throughout the entire process and told the media earlier in the week that he was "scared to death" to visit his daughter because he was so worried about her fate and weakening condition.

"She's shown such a determination to live. It's incredible," he said at the time.

In a press conference with reports after Terri's death, Bob told the media that Terri "spoke loudly" even thought she was unable to speak for herself.

"As a member of our family unable to stand under your own power, you stood with a grace and a dignity that made your family proud," he said. "Terri, we love you dearly, but we know that God loves you more than we do. We must accept your untimely death as God's will."

I believe it is a widely known fact that people who do what they believe is morally correct get a good feeling from doing the right thing.

I know I do. I wouldn't go so far as to call it "having a good time" but I know it feels good.

I think it's God's way of letting you know that you're doing His will.

Matthews is such a little man. He's already convinced most of us. He can now slow down his efforts to make sure we know just a tiny bit.

Chris Matthews has never been able to display any true signs of cognitive functioning. Everything he says sounds like some sort of random reflex parroting a talking points memo.

Tacomonkey,
Thanks for running this piece of slime with addy. My email to Matthews, to wit:
Mr. Matthews,
Some commentators have cut you slack for your gross and outrageous comments about a variety of topics. They claim that you are simply trying to build your ratings.
I believe you have stepped over the line into calloused and outrageous defamation.
Your recent comments about the Pope have shown a remarkable ignorance of his mission.
Your comment that Terri Schaivo's father was "having a good time" during his daughter's dying are worse than outrageous.
You have won a seat on the dark side. There is no longer a reason for people of good will to allow your words into their minds.

I had the privilege of speaking to Mr. Schindler alone about three weeks ago. Believe me...he was having anything BUT a good time. Just the look in his eyes was enough to prove that, and he was trying hard to smile as I spoke, trying to quietly reassure him, but he didn't quite succeed. A great, brave man.

If you are under that kind of stress, and then have all these damn press cameras in your face, you are not used to it, you are bound to act a little odd.

I know for a fact I would be giddy out of sheer nervousness and angst.

Thats the saddest picture.
Wow...man...that's really heartbreaking.

I don't think you realize how this is affecting kids my age...my generation.
This is blowing the minds of everyone I know, whether or not they are especially religious.

I have emailed friends in the military about TS and they are PO'ed! This is an insult to everything they believe in!

We grew up with the background music of abortion on demand, we had school shootings in the news all the time, (your generation had bomb drills I heard, did you ever have a school shooting drill? My friends did!)
Columbine, 9-11, I have friends of mine in the military, while the media belittles them and dehumanizes them at every chance.

And now this!!

We will be the 60's generation ...in reverse.

And folks in The Greatest Generation must be absolutely HORRIFIED! Not only did they fight AGAINST this same thing in nazi Germany, but the youngest of them is in their eighties now...the irony is that they are facing the same deaths they spent their youth fighting AGAINST. IT IS OBSCENE!!!!!!!!!

Yet another reason why I refuse to watch MSNBC - I cannot fathom ....nope, yes I can. Just another liberal commie using power to sway poor niave' Americans to their side.

Thanks for the email addy for action - consider the letter sent! Of all the nerve...

Elizabeth Kubler Ross is credited with bringing to the world the 5 stages of grief. Especially related to death and dying - but it is relevent to all grieving situations.

Everyone deals with these things in their own way. It is a personal, self-defense kind of action that kicks in sunconsciencely to protect the psyche. To presume anyone grieves 'incorrectly', or is doing something deemed inappropriate at the time of a loved ones death is crazy. Unless of course you are Michael,George or Judge Greer.

This, I am afraid, is only the beginning. God be with us all. JK

Since Kerry received the Democratic nomination, Chris Matthews has been close to a mental breakdown and at times does not seem quite normal. He became hysterical with Michelle Malkin (perhaps he felt rejected by her) and he was screaming at others, making false accusations, trying to force his own words into their mouths.

Here is mine:

Your comments on Bob Schindler were very uncalled for. Callous and disgusting. How dare you insult a person who is grieving!

I am an EMT and I can tell you that people in grief often behave in an inappropriate manner while they are in shock. We had a family friend who was in an accident that decapitated him. When my sister told us, she was laughing....she didn't think it was funny. This person was her best friend. Her emotions were confused. I have seen this many, many times.

But, your behavior, I have, thankfully, rarely seen. Ignorant, insensitive behavior and comments have been uncommon in the reporters I viewed.

You should be ashamed of yourself, and apologize, but I am sure your arrogance keeps you from doing the right thing.

I had to take the Kubler Ross course in college...laughed myself silly all the way through, when I wasn't crying over the tragedy of the reasoning. The one that got me most was her contention that Christians are just as afraid of death as everyone else. They say they're not because they're trying to find a "brave" way to face death. Didn't do me a bit of good to argue that one from a Christian perspective, I can tell you that.

Very well put. That was something I was thinking. too. When you help a brother or siter in Christ - no matter what the circumstance, it gives you a lift spiritually.Even if the outcome is not what WE on Earth want - we as Christians must put our wants aside and live in God's will. Terri was put in His hands a long time ago. That, however, must be a very difficult concept for Matthews to grasp.

Especially when you consider his comments regarding the Pope. Who is HE to question motives of grieving people - he should, rather, take a long look at himself. JK
