Before the 15th Century, the Pope commanded an army to defend the Papal States in Italy for the Church.

I believe that in the 1506 incident, the Captain of the Swiss Guard had converted to Protestantism (as did many in Switzerland). But, true to his vow to protect the Pope, he gave his life on the altar of St. Peter's Cathedral, delaying the advance of whoever it was that was attacking, as the Pope made his escape out the back door. Subsequent Popes have continued to contract with the Swiss Guard in honor of the heroism of this man.
