POPE’S BURIAL ENDS THE LULL—STORM COMING
Catholic League president William Donohue remarked as follows:
“The storm is about to hit. For the most part, anti-Catholic bigots and the disaffected dissidents within the Church have been quiet. What they have been waiting for is about to happen: the week between the end of the mourning and the beginning of the conclave is upon us. And that means the Left is ready to explode.
“Consider what we’ve heard already. Amidst the mostly favorable coverage by the media of Pope John Paul II, he has been branded as follows: an authoritarian who seeks to silence dissent; the enemy of homosexuals; a misogynist; a polarizing figure; a man who is out of touch with the modern world; a contributor to death due to AIDS in Africa; responsible for the sexual abuse scandal; and so on.
“And we’ve heard a CBS newsperson blast the pope for ruling the Church with ‘an iron fist’ (this was said between the final four basketball games on Saturday); the Jewish Forward said whatever good he did may be undermined by his ‘battles around the world for sexual repressiveness and against reproductive freedom’; the Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minneapolis posted a sign on its property saying, ‘ALL WELCOME, CHRIST IS ALIVE, THE POPE IS DEAD’; the president of the J. Paul Getty Trust commented on ‘the spectacle of grotesquerie and human ruin that has lately filled the balcony above St. Peter’s Square’; Christopher Hitchens said he was ‘part of the coverup and obstruction of justice’ attendant to the homosexual scandal; Sister Helen Prejean, who is soft on abortion, took him to task for not changing his mind soon enough on capital punishment (and in doing so managed to misrepresent his pronouncements on the subject—the pope never said it was an intrinsic evil like abortion); and a website called ‘HillaryNow,’ operated by Robert Kunst, said that when the pope went to Israel, he ordered an ambulance to follow him so that in the event he needed a transfusion, he would not have to access ‘Jewish blood.’
“But this is nothing. Many have been waiting for this moment for more than a quarter century. When they lose again, watch out.”

I love Bill Donohue's work, but he sometimes lapses into histrionics a la Al Sharpton.
Histrionics, yes. While I'm sure there has been a snide remark or negative comment here and there, on balance I've heard nothing but respectful and positive commentary. The author must have been seeking out the negativity.
There has actually been a respectful lull in anti-Christian attacks in general. I'm sure the anti-Christian left will be back in full-force soon, but they were there before the Pope passed on.
Actually, ABC had them on - Richard McBrien and Scott Appleby both criticized the pope from the liberal firing line WHILE the funeral Mass was going on. Amazing.
The shameless Bernie Law, who should be in a US jail for aiding and abetting child rape, will celebrate one of the key Vatican masses this week. That should torque off more than a few of the faithful, especially in the Boston area. Talk about insensitive.

The mainline Protestant perspective - Episcopal/Lutheran/Presbyterian - on the Pope is one of respect and love.
We prayed last Lord's Day for the RCC, the Pope and the College of Cardinals in the congregation I serve and will continue to lift up our RC brothers and sisters in prayer as the Spirit guides the Cardinals in the selection of a new Pope.
Donahue's right. For years, I've heard liberal catholics say:
"After the current Pope is gone..."
"When we have a new Pope..."
"As long as the current Pope is still around..."
They've always had this assumption that, after John Paul II is gone, they'll somehow be able to talk the next Pope into changing the doctrine of the Church to suit their needs.
They'll be sadly disappointed, because they don't understand the presence of the Holy Spirit in the Church.
And then they'll be pissed.
Don't worry, they won't go to Mass anyway, unless it's Easter or Christmas, judging by attendance at my Church.
It's not a simple "I love the Pope and all he stood for and all he did" vs. "I hate God and the Pope and what he stood for and what he did."
I think the Pope did a lot of good, and the world is better off in many ways because of the life he led.
But I also believe he was a sinner until the day he died, in need of a Savior, and held some unbliblical perspectives, and did some things that harmed people.
Again, it's not EITHER the Pope is perfectly wonderful OR he's the antichrist. The Pope was BOTH a fine man who lived a fine life AND a sinner who thought and did some bad things. FWIW, I try to life a fine life, and I'm a sinner who thinks and does some bad things....
That's exactly the point Donahue was making. In the relatively CALM, RESPECTFUL period of the Pope's final hours until funeral, these are all the vicious attacks levied against him. That is the calm, the storm will be much much worse.

Johnny, I live only 3-4 miles from that church.
This church espouses the typical pro-gay, we love everyone, peace and social justice now! mindset that can be found all across south Minneapolis.
What they did was to take a shot at the Pope by putting up a sign like that. The sad part is that they won't even make an attempt to justify it. All you get is the boo-hoo "Our sign was vandalized" routine.

I read elsewhere that that pastor (or whatever they call the man and woman who run it) infiltrated a Christian protest with a "God hates fags" sign?

There are no more protestants. There is no difference between Democrat and Republican. The agenda NEVER changes...a One World Government and a One World Religion.
The Vatican will be the head of that one world religion, bringing in all faiths thru tolerance. We are being driven like cattle to slaughter just because we THINK we are accomplishing something by taking a side, when the agenda never changes, and the people lose ground more and more everyday.
WHAT a joke and what fools we are.
