King Target Of Schiavo Partisans (Fla. State Senator Worried About Reelection)
The Florida Times-Union ^ | April 10, 2005 | J. Taylor Rushing

TALLAHASSEE -- Jim King has a 19-year record of solid fiscal conservatism in Tallahassee and a resume that includes the presidency of the Florida Senate.

He easily won the only three contested elections he's ever had and was most recently re-elected with 66 percent of the vote.

But King is worried about re-election in 2006, and he may have good reason. Jacksonville's most senior state senator is the only one of nine Republicans who is up for re-election after voting against a state law last month that may have saved Terri Schiavo's life.

King also is the subject of an online petition drive that asks Gov. Jeb Bush and the state Republican Party to suspend him, permanently remove him from office and bar him from representing the party -- all because of his Schiavo vote.

Only a year ago, signs along major highways in Jacksonville hailed King for pushing through a state law change while Senate president that won millions in state money for local schools.

"And this year, members of my own party are screaming for my head," he said. "It's living proof that politics is a contact sport."

It is uncomfortable but familiar ground for King, who already created a political crisis in 2003 by butting heads with Bush during debate over medical malpractice lawsuit limits. King led a Senate that took fire for refusing to support any lawsuit cap below $500,000, with the resulting stalemate dividing Republicans and causing a string of special legislative sessions.

I sure hope he's worried, and I hope we can all give him good reason to stay worried - and in fact can even prevent him from running again and get a good GOPer in there.

King has not been numbered among the standard villains of this piece, yet it seems to me he could quite easily have saved Terri Schiavo's life. In fact, isn't he the one most responsible for the legislation Judge Greer cited as the basis for having her killed?

He is an example of why a snake-in-the-grass Republican is more dangerous than a liberal Democrat.

Any politician supporting euthanasia ought to be a target, especially a Republican.

Men have to be held accountable for their actions, and their votes.

If you can't comprehend that cutting off water is murder, then you need to be returned to private life.

He's reaping what he's sown. An innocent woman is dead because of men like him turning their faces the other away.

It is clearly time for this guy to "retire".

If he chooses to run again, I don't care what his record is on anything else. I very much hope he loses.

King is VERY influential and could (and should) have persuaded others to save Terry had he th cajones to do so. He deserves to go!

He shares the guilt for Terry Schiavo's murder, which makes him an accomplice to murder. Now he pretends to be surprised that people don't admire him for it. He made his bed; let him lie in it.

Notice also that although the MSM calls him a conservative, he sided with the tort lawyers in blocking a cap on medical malpractice lawsuits. Tort lawyers are major campaign donors to people who vote that way. I don't recall the details, but I believe he has incestuous connections among the Florida medical mafia. This malpractice vote tends to confirm it.

Not just King, I hope Florida makes note of the death democrats, and vote them out. I'd like to see them running scared as King is.

If fiscal conservatism means putting people to death to save a dollar, I'll pass on it. I only wish I lived in his district so I could contribute to his defeat.

Is this the one who didn't want to support Terri's Law back in '03 because he regarded euthanasia as "his legacy", because of some legislation he'd earlier got through?
