Zarqawi had a close call with Marines
Washington Times ^ | 4/11/05 | Rowan Scarborough

Abu Musab Zarqawi, the most-wanted terrorist in Iraq, is on the run in an undeveloped western border region where he was nearly caught in recent weeks, a U.S. Marine commander says.

"He's going from brush pile to brush pile just like a wet rat," said Lt. Gen. John F. Sattler, whose 1st Marine Expeditionary Force is back home at Camp Pendleton, Calif., after months of intense combat in Anbar province. "I believe he possibly slid back into the Anbar area, possibly the hinterlands."

Gen. Sattler, who commanded operations in the region, said in an interview with The Washington Times that the U.S.-led coalition has forced Zarqawi to work "independently" by killing or capturing his first- and second-string lieutenants.

Zarqawi fled the Anbar region before his base in Fallujah was captured by a Marine-Army force in November. He operated in northern Iraq until he was pressed back to western Iraq, but this time in isolated frontier country.

"He can't use cell phones," Gen. Sattler said of the Jordanian-born terrorist, whose capture promises a $25 million reward. "He can't use any type of Internet. He doesn't know who he can trust."

[...]

Gen. Sattler disclosed in the interview that his Marines and special operations troops came within a whisker of capturing the terror master "within the last six weeks" in western Iraq.

While guarded on details, Gen. Sattler said that only poor visibility in bad weather allowed Zarqawi to escape.

"The elements worked to his advantage," the three-star general said.

I don't know that it's luck. Satan is helping him out.

Rudolf eluded the US government for years and he never left a couple of counties in North Carolina. Keeping from getting caught isn't that tough, running an operation and not getting caught--that's much tougher.

I personally think it's just blown out of proportion. This one escape occurred about six weeks ago. How many different times have we now read about it, with many readers likely presuming it was a separate instance each time? Then throw a healthy dose of "possibly's" and "maybe's" and you've got quite a legend brewing.

That's what I think, too. The devil protects his own. Like the assasination attempts on Hitler, and, I believe, Stalin, which were unsuccessful.

no...I am assuming all the stuff in the past 2 years with this clown.

We got a piece of him back in May of 2004 and he has nearly been caught several other times, only to jump out of a car trunk right before a checkpoint or sneak out in a Burqa or something.

I'll go you one better, if one of our Marines kills that worm and is then subsequently charged with Murder, I would pray that 70 million Americans Descend on Washington DC in outrage.

Something in THAT cesspool has to change before anything in the Marine Corps will change.

I hope that if he is caught alive we get to see the news footage of him in shackles & an orange jumpsuit while being deloused. A little humiliation will go a long way toward demystifying these losers from "revolutionaries" and jihad warriors into what they really are: common criminals

Only if we are allowed to totally shave their heads from the collar bone up ( I think we should do this to all prisoners over there ). Make them eat a ham sandwich and give them pages of the Koran for toilet paper, if they use it. I figure as long as no panties are forced on his head he can't complain.

" I hope that if one of our Marines shoots him."...

....it's filmed by the liberal MSM, and shown worldwide.

Aint that the truth! But stop "getting close" to him and nail him already!! That guy must be a basketcase - on the run constantly, looking over his shoulder all the time, sleeping infrequently, etc. Wouldnt surprise me at if he looks like Saddam did when pulled from his spider hole.
