Conservative Lawmaker: DeLay Should Quit

NewsMax.com Wires

Saturday, April 16, 2005

WASHINGTON -- One of Congress' most conservative members on Friday became the second House Republican to urge Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step aside because of the ethics scrutiny he's facing.

"If the majority leader were to temporarily step aside so that these trumped up charges can be dealt with in a less hostile environment, as they have proven to be an unnecessary distraction, it may be a productive move," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo.

Tancredo's comments come after Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays, a moderate Republican, urged DeLay to resign from his leadership position at the beginning of the week. Also, Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, said DeLay needs to answer questions about his ethics.

Tancredo, elected in 1998, said he believes all charges against DeLay, R-Texas, "lack merit" and are "being leveled in the hopes of bringing him down and with him, the Republican majority."

Tancredo is known in the House for his tough stand on immigration and has 100 percent rating from the American Conservative Union for votes and his position on issues.

DeLay has been dogged by questions for months about his overseas travel, corporate fundraising in 2002 for Texas legislative campaigns, campaign payments to family members and his connections to a lobbyist now under federal investigation.

Some GOP colleagues have suggested his continuing ethics controversy is harming the GOP, while others say the criticism has been orchestrated by Democrats and their liberal allies.

DeLay has said he is eager to appear before the leaders of the House ethics committee and give "everything I have" in connection with allegations of misconduct. Spokesman Dan Allen provided a similar comment Friday and cited a list of accomplishments by House Republicans with DeLay as majority leader.

Before DeLay can meet with the ethics committee, Democrats and Republicans must resolve a deadlock over rules Republicans pushed through the House. Democrats oppose the changes.

It is probably time for a letter/email campaign to Tancredo to let him know that conservatives who support strict border and immigration control are also those who support DeLay. Tancredo is destroying his own support.

There is no doubt that Tom Tancredo's recent comments on Delay has caused a bit of a huge stir among many but I still support Congressman Tom Tancredo's fight to end our illegal immigration crisis. Tom Tancredo is just as conservative as Tom Delay but Tancredo is far more conservative than Delay on the immigration and free-trade issues.

The seriousness to combat illegal immigration will be muted if Tom Tancredo is not in the House of Representives. It was a bit of a surprise for me to see Tom Tancredo have a personal opinion of Tom Delay. I know that every single "politican" of both parties have flaws. Tom Tancredo as well as Tom Delay are no exception.

Both Delay and Tancredo make mistakes when it comes to personal statements that upsets people but we need realize that both Delay and Tancredo are human beings and human beings are prone to mistakes.

As usual the Republicans seem willing to attack one another, the media sees this and runs with it. If you got a problem with the guy say it to his face. Not the media. They will do the conservatives no favors and do all they can to make it worse than what it really is.

Tom Tancredo is outstanding on immigration, I can't for the life of me why he has jumped ahead of the pack and taken cheap shots at Tom Delay. Kicking him when he's down. Delay is very good on immigration, Israel and right to life. He had the guts to publicly state his abhorrence of the black robed punk Greer

Karl Rove is Tom Tancredo's real enemy and has behaved viciously to Tom, while kow-towing to Mexican dictator Vicente Fox. Tom is dumping on the wrong guy.

If you are refering to the fact that I backstab people like Rep. Tom Delay, you are dead wrong. I have no negative opinion of Rep. Tom Delay at all. PERIOD. I just feel that people need to understand that this whole fiasco of focusing on Tom Delay as well as saying crap about Tom Tancredo need to stop. I know as a fact that you have a personal grudge against Tom Tancredo and I personally don't give a rat-ass about it. Tancredo as well as Delay are both exceptionally well-qualified conservative Republicans that needs their full-support. I give these two "EQUAL" support and I can understand the pressure that Mr. Delay is getting a bad rap and the media don't need to focus keep on harping this issue. There are many important issues that facing this nation such as combating illegal immigration, getting the situation at Iraq to improve, ending the outsourcing problem that is hurting Americans, as well as protecting the unborn rather than focusing on one politician in Washington DC. Quite frankly, I believe that Tancredo still has the chance of becoming a rising star in the Republican Party as well as the frontrunner for the 2008 Republican Presidential Primary and yes, I do believe that Delay needs to improve its imagine as effective Majority Leader. That's all I have to say for now.

Yep- Delay should quit- Tancredo should quit- George W.Bush should quit-Why we ough tleave the filthy mess to the Jacki
that have dictated the dialogue since WW Twice.Every Christian-every Patriot-every member of Congress NOT under
influence of the transmission belt to Soviet Communist
Dictatorship (the ACLU ) ought Quit. The Dems and the
Republicans have made Congress essentially irrelevant anyhow.Even President Bush acknoledged we are no longer that
system established 1776-1791but under the Oligarchy of
Despots. Our mere politicians believe we could not exist
independent of that extra Constitutional anti-American organ the U.N.That petty despot to the South believes we are
Mexico's cash cow and exist solely to protect Mexican jobs
and future. So everyone not progressive enough to be part
of the new world order of human bondage ought quit.

" ... The seriousness to combat illegal immigration will be muted if Tom Tancredo is not in the House of Representives."

Tancredo has shown that he is for Tancredo first and a Republican second. The notion that Tancredo is "superman" as far as illegal immigration is concerned is bogus.

Unity of purpose is the key in any battle.

Perhaps Tancredo, reeling from the "kryptonite", will simply shut up for a while and stay in Colorado until he gets better.

Dane, I am not Tom Tancredo. Sorry if I confused you. I'm just a 21 year old conservative Republican from Southern California.

I tend to support both Tancredo and Delay. Both guys are excellent conservatives but Tancredo is the one that I like the most. I like Tancredo because of his strong stance on illegal immigration as well as his seriousness to protect our borders.

I also like Tom Delay because of his pro-Israel and pro-Christian positions on life and morality.

In conclusion, both men are really needed in the House of Representives and this issue of attacking both Tancredo and Delay needs to be put aside.

Well then tom tancredo should have thought about that before attacking Tom Delay.

You can't put your hands up to your ears and scream "lalalalalalalala", I don't want to hear about it.

Tancredo is an opportunist, and the time for not attacking either one was before Tancredo made his ill-considered statement to the press.

It is Tancredo who is causing the problem. I don't believe I have seen Tom Delay on television backstabbing Tancredo.
