Legislation Seeking to Criminalize Ultrasounds without Doctor's Order Moves in Springfield

Wednesday, April 06, 2005

By The Leader-Springfield Bureau

SPRINGFIELD -- Pro-abortion forces won a victory in the Illinois House Wednesday as State Rep. Rosemary Mulligan (R-Park Ridge) successfully passed HB 2492 which would make it a criminal offense for an ultrasound to be administered without a doctor's order

Mulligan said that Planned Parenthood and the Illinois State Medical Society encouraged her to sponsor the legislation because there was a concern about long exposure of fetuses to ultrasound waves.

"There's a new little industry that does ultrasound videos on babies before they're born for entertainment purposes," the Cook County legislator told her colleagues. "There is concern about the neurological development with long exposure."

When asked by State Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Wheaton) whether or not it would effect crisis pregnancy centers who have recently begun doing ultrasounds on women considering abortion, Mulligan said she wasn't familiar with the practice in those agencies, and deferred a clear response.

"I am assuming those agencies have doctor's orders to perform the ultrasounds, so I don't know whether this would change their policies or not," she responded.

Mulligan, who is a strong abortion advocate, said that an ultrasound should not be done for political reasons to make anyone change their minds about any particular purpose.

Hultgren called the proposal "disconcerting" that the bill was being promoted as a minor bill. "This is very serious," Hultgren said. "I encourage everyone to vote no. A person shouldn't be charged as a criminal for doing a two minute ultrasound on an expectant woman."

State Rep. Coreen Gordon (D-Kankakee) asked for specific studies indicating the harm an unborn baby would face for prolonged exposure to ultrasound.

Mulligan said that the Federal Drug Administration had warned that muscle and nerve development could be affected by long exposure.

"We should be concerned about the long term health of the fetus," Mulligan, who has voted against a ban on partial birth abortion, said.

The bill passed with bi-partisan support with 76 yes votes and 32 no votes.

Six voted present.

The legislation would make it a Class A misdemeanor for an ultrasound to be performed without a doctor's orders.

It now moves to the Illinois Senate, where it will go through committee before a floor vote.

"Mulligan said that Planned Parenthood and the Illinois State Medical Society encouraged her to sponsor the legislation because there was a concern about long exposure of fetuses to ultrasound waves."

As opposed to the benefits to the fetus of ripping it to pieces or killing it with a strong saline solution.

I know for a fact that these ultrasounds have saved at least one life in my town in the past week.

I never cease to be amaxed how powerful the "it's not a baby" propaganda is.

The only thing I think of is that the media has become Savvy about google alerts.

Notice the headline says nothing about pro-life, planned parentood, abortion, etc....

Key words that would alert those interested in such legislation to find out!

What about that well known and documented right of privacy contained in the US Constitution? (/sarcasm) Why doesn't this procedure fall under it as does abortion?

GREAT MINDS apparently think alike! lol My husband and I have the "We need to get the heck out of this corrupt state" on a regular basis and was pretty much the topic of our conversations yesterday as well!

I have heard of these TUPPERWARE-LIKE parties, wherein pregnant woman meet to view 3-D images of their unborn baby.

(By the way, why would PRO-ABORTIONISTS continue to use the term FETUS, when the WORD *FETUS* is the LATIN WORD for *BABY*?)

Anyway, I am also confused as to WHY they...... PLANNED PARENTHOOD....would want a law prohibiting the use of ultra sounds which as they say....*could* adversely affect the "normal development" of an unborn BABY, when their MORE THAN OBVIOUS *CONCERN*, is that the images of the baby....REALITY.....might dissuade women from actually ELIMINATING the possibility of "normal development" PERMANENTLY! :_O

With THAT said, THAT.....being the OBVIOUS......Which STUDIES have been conducted, which PROVES the foundation of their allegations? What documented, conclusive PROOF, was utilized to support the passing of this bill?

Oh...and one more observation.....is this NOT *THE GOVERNMENT* trampling on the rights of citizens and is this not GOVERNMENT, invading and IMPOSING theory and FORCED GOVERNMENT decision making unto *FAMILY MATTERS & DECISIONS*?

What a bunch of LYING, HYPOCRITICAL, LAW MANIPULATING ENIGMAS!

I saw the link to call Iowa senators, but is there a link for e-mails, as well?

Of course, it is far more effective to call your state senator, but for folks in a hurry, it would be helpful to have both.

Not only that, but you can be really effective if you BOTH call and e-mail.

And if you have some time, if you go IN PERSON to the state senator's office, and leave off a short letter, you can REALLY be effective.

We can contact the Health & Human Services Committe linked above, but I'm not so sure the 7 dems are going to let this die. I think our best chance will be contact the state senators and reminding them we keep tab of their voting records.

I'm already upset about the mental health screening they'll be doing in the schools and on pregnant women(?).

If I hadn't waited 25 years for the property I'm on, I'd be out of here...

And leftists have the gall of calling us "fascists!?" They always love to hide the truth!
