11 Mad Max fans are arrested

The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO - Eleven fans of the Mad Max movies were arrested this weekend after their convoy of motorcycles and other vehicles surrounding a tanker truck frightened other motorists on Interstate 10 and Loop 410.

Some of the people in the convoy were carrying fake machine guns. Dispatchers received several calls about a "militia" moving toward the city, according to a police report.

One of the organizers of the convoy said the arrests were unfair. The organizer, Chris Fenner, said he didn't know why anyone would confuse the costumed crew re-creating a scene from Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior -- set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland -- with a real threat.

"I honestly don't know how that could be, because Road Warrior was so over the top," he said.

The convoy was organized in conjunction with a Mad Max marathon at a San Antonio movie theater. The procession formed at a Boerne motorcycle dealership and traveled on Interstate 10 to Loop 410 to Texas 151 and the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.

Police accused nine people, including Fenner, with obstruction of a highway and two others with possession of prohibited knives and obstruction of a highway.

About 25 people participated in the convoy, and more than 50 had been expected to attend the movie marathon, which was canceled after the arrests.

This is one of the more hilarious stories I've heard in a while. Who knew Mad Max had fans similar to Star Trek Trekkies?

LOL! Yeah, I loved those movies when I was a kid, but I'm not about to dress up as a Road Warrior...

possession of prohibited knives

I have to ask. What the heck is a "prohibited knife" in Texas?

Honestly, I'm not real sure. I'd guess one of those double sided knives used in stabbings or maybe a switchblade.

These people have way too much time on their hands. Am I the ONLY one who actually has to go to work?

Anything with a blade over 5 1/2 inches long, unless you are hunting, on private property, or traveling.

As these folks appear to have been traveling, the arrest charges seem to be quite a stretch.

The nanny state strikes. Can't have timid little sheeple scared of anything.

Wow, can't believe I missed a Mad Max get together.

Believe it or not, a Bowie knife.

Texas ain't like it was 20 years ago. We are becoming more and more like a nanny state thanks to Anne Richards , past governor, Kathy Whitmire and the Pirate Mayor of Houston.
