Not a matter of need, maybe more a matter of image, perhaps as defender against evil and, in following in JPII's legacy, as a peacemaker at the same time.

Peace through strength?

Aren't we the idiot. He never was a party member.

You're wrong. I'm a conserative that means a respect for the truth. Liberals are the ones who twist the facts to fit their agenda. It is what it is. You may be able to justify or forgive it but for God's sake don't deny it.

https://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/42823.htm

"Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger — a favorite to become the next pontiff — joined the Nazi children's corps in 1941 as a 14-year-old and was later an anti-aircraft gunner. At one point, he guarded a factory where slaves from a concentration camp were forced to work. He was later shipped to Hungary, where he reportedly saw Jews persecuted.

Ratzinger, a staunch conservative dubbed "God's Rottweiler," has said he joined the Hitler Youth when membership became compulsory. He and his brother were later drafted but deserted. The cardinal claims he never fired a shot and that resistance would have meant death. Not so, Germans from his hometown of Traunstein told The Times of London.

"It was possible to resist, and those people set an example for others," recalled Elizabeth Lohner, 84. "The Ratzingers were young — and they had made a different choice."

You're very fortunate. I can't wait to hear our Bishop's (trautman, erie) first comments on the new Pope. He must be part of that amchurch group just choking on this new choice. It's sure to stir things up.

Pope Benedict XVI is the sixth Pope of my lifetime.
I was born under the Papacy of Pius XII... albeit near the end. :)

It's great to be an eyewitness to history. I was 8 years old when JPII was named the Pope of the RCC. :)

If it were not for infant baptism and praying to saints I could become catholic. The vatican is a beautiful place.

LOL!
Well, I was "near" the end.
I'll concede youth to you...lol.
Maybe I should admit, I recall the election of John XXIII, but I was a "very" young girl.

SSDD on GMA this morning.

You really might want to take a break from the idiots on the idiot box and try the radio some morning. The new guy from 5-to-9 AM on 600 AM is conservative and usually pretty interesting.

Yep, thats what I was thinking when I posted it. I also thought of the michealangelo pic creation of adam, with the hands touching...very symbolic.

Excellent resource to defend the new Pope against those who would say he's a Nazi! Thank you!

Glory be! Ratzinger is a marvelous choice. I thought he had made too many enemies to be elected, and I was wrong. This is a complete and total rejection of the liberal dissenters. It's a kick in the face for them. More important, it's a sign that the Cardinals have decided to respect God rather than men.

I just got out of class and this is the first I have seen this wonderful news.
