I'm a little sad - I really was hoping for Cardinal Arinze. But Cardinal Ratzinger will certainly be a fine Pope and continue the work of John Paul II. God Bless him and God Bless the Church.

Isn't this the man who made a rather pointed comment about the MSM that they considered a liability? Or was that someone else? Of all the people circulated for Pope that was the only one that grabbed my eye.

Best Wishes to Catholics on your new Pope. The idea of a German Pope seems right at this time.

I'm not surprised at this turn of events, since Ratzinger had a few things in his favor going into this conclave (his age, his personal connection to Pope John Paul II, and his stature within the Vatican). What is being overlooked here is that we have now had two consecutive non-Italian popes -- which means that the papacy is clearly seen as more of an international institution than it once was.
