Maybe it is just a different culture in the UK.

A lot of school relax the uniform for 16 - 18 year olds but up to 16 they are expected to wear it.

Regarding the issue of looking the same from my experience if there is no uniform the kids themselves give themselves one in wearing what is the latest fashion which normally means the same colour and style tops and trousers or skirts so by default you have created one.

IMHO I think it just looks nice especially with the younger children and I also think it instills a form of discipline both for the child and the parents and is good experience to the child for correct and proper dressing later in their working life.
