Darlington is such a great track, and a real part of the NASCAR heritage, I just wish the Sat night race started a little earlier.
With the amazing spike in NASCAR popularity in the last decade, a huge percentage of the "fans" hardly even heard of it. They are the same "fans" that think Las Vegas, Kansas & Chicagoland are good race tracks.
Even as a New England yankee, I think NASCAR screwed up in the '70's when they came as far north as Long Pond, PA. I had no beef going south to se th big guys run when I was a kid (and dad paid the bills).
That said, I think a set of tires should still be good after a heck of a lot more than 3 laps.
Thanks for the heads-up, WCG. Good to see Dianne Dorton doing something like this.
Laps for Charity - Fans Get to Drive on the Speedway May 14 - 5/14/2005 Hundreds of thousands of race fans watched some of racing's greatest drivers compete at Texas Motor Speedway recently during the Samsung/RadioShack 500 weekend. Now it is the fans' turn to drive on "The Great American Speedway" during the annual Speedway Children's Charities Laps for Charity Saturday evening, May 14, from 5 to 10 p.m.
Laps for Charity gives race fans the rare opportunity to drive their passenger vehicles around the 1.5-mile superspeedway under controlled conditions. Participants will get to drive three laps around Texas Motor Speedway for a $25 donation to the Texas chapter of Speedway Children's Charities.
Fans participating in the May 14 Laps for Charity can enter the speedway infield through the south tunnel. Participants' speed during Laps for Charity will be controlled by a pace car on the speedway. Participants must be 21 years old to drive in Laps for Charity and all passengers must be at least six years of age. All occupants of the vehicle must wear a seatbelt.
Car clubs (minimum of 12 cars) can call the Speedway Children's Charities office at (817) 215-8564 to schedule a special session during the evening ride and drive.
Speedway Children's Charities Texas Chapter assists youth-based organizations in Tarrant, Dallas, Denton and Collin counties. More than $2.7 million has been provided to area youth organizations by the local chapter since 1997. For more information on Laps for Charity contact Speedway Children's Charities at (817) 215-8564.

We just went to the NAPA store here and saw the 8 car again, with the same hauler crew that we met in Cleburne.
They are headed to Larado tonight and will be there at the NAPA store for tomorrow. Then they are headed to Montanna. They have driven 8000 miles in Texas with this car since April and said they didn't think that there was this much to Texas. (Heh Heh < /snicker >)
If you have a Southern Texas ping list you want to pass this on please.
Thanks for signing the petition, I will have to post it on other driver boards to see if we can get this going!!
