AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) -- Texas lawmakers sent a message to the state's high school cheerleaders Wednesday: no more booty-shaking at the game.

The state's House of Representatives voted 85-55 to approve a bill that would forbid sexy cheers and give the Texas Education Agency authority to punish schools that allow "overtly sexually suggestive" routines at football games and other events.

Sheesh, am I the only one? Where's the heavy-handed pseudo-fascist religious right the liberals gripe about all the time? I'm feeling kind on lonely here.

No, you are not. The only problem I have with forbidding that kind of stuff is that it is the legislature doing it. Where in Hell are these girls' PARENTS???

Following this logic, Elvis the Pelvis should have been banned in the 50s and 60s. And the movie Dirty Dancing should have been rated 'R'.

Can I be part of the observation team?

I'm a dad and have 2 daughters. 13 and 19. Thankfully, we've not done the cheerleader thing, as they prefer to be the ones being cheered for.

I really do know where you're coming from, though, and I tend to agree with you,

Oh the summer a few years back when the oldest thought braless spagetti straps were the "uniform" of the day. I may be the least socially conservative person on this site - except when it comes to my girls. I lost that battle that day, but boy howdy did I win the war.

I was a cheerleader in high school (and for the record, I also participated in track and cross-country; cheering wasn't my only activity). We didn't shake our breasts, act like Vegas showgirls, or walk around half naked. We did cheer at games, ran pep rallies, danced and tumbled and practiced and practiced some more. I had more injuries in cheerleading than I did in track and cross country.

This is much ado about nothing.

You are NOT alone. I'm with you, too. I went to Public School in the Philly Suburbs about ten years ago, and we had standards. I can't remember a soul anywhere who complained about it, let along resort to the basal labeling some on here apparently hurl at anyone who disagrees with them on here.

The folks on here are worse than the liberals about the "Religious Right". They usually call you the Taliban-wing or worse.

Reminds me of the ditsy substitute cheerleader in The Replacements who had a hard time calling out the letters to spell out "Sentinels" ... several times!

Exactly. I am kind of baffled as to why nobody else has not complained about it and handled it from within the school system. These parents sign off on that behavior?

That is a very good question. Where ARE their parents?

Did anyone else just have a vision of a bunch of cheerleaders yelling "We're Number One"?

Your "pitiful Pearl" routine is really getting old, whining when there's no reason at all on this thread to whine.

"IMO, parents at the school district level should be the ones to put a stop or allow whatever is within "community standards", rather than having state legislation about this."

Nobody goes to jail in Texas for drunk driving until they actually kill somebody.
