"blaming Newsweek for the actions of a bunch of insane muslims seems to me to make the case that they are not responsible for their own actions."

Two separate, yet important, points.
Yes, it is true that no one should get whacked out over the 'defilement' of some printed books (particularly when they belong in the 'hallucinatory tales' part of the library -- but that's another topic). If a Bible gets burned or defiled, a Christian's attitude would be: 'that's a pity - but its your loss. It is God's Word, no amount of burning, ridicule, defacement, watering down is going to stop it. You'll have better success telling the ocean waves to stop coming ashore, than in stopping God's Word'.
One has to be very insecure about their deity, or their 'book' if they get worked up into a froth just because someone used it for kindling or tissue paper...

But that's just the first point. The second point is that Newsweek appears to have knowingly published a story based on scant evidence just because it would cast America (ostensibly the host nation of said 'news' magazine) in ill light - and they had to know they were using this article to intentionally aggravate an insecure, and short-fused mob...For this Newsweek should be held accountable. Terminations at a minimum. Possibly heavy fines, and legal charges as well...

The following should be applied to Newsweek:

16 May, 1918
The U.S. Sedition Act

SECTION 3. Whoever, when the United States is at war,
shall willfully make or convey false reports or false
statements with intent to interfere with the operation
or success of the military or naval forces of the
United States, or to promote the success of its
enemies, or shall willfully make or convey false
reports, or false statements, . . . or incite
insubordination, disloyalty, mutiny, or refusal of
duty, in the military or naval forces of the United
States, or shall willfully obstruct . . . the
recruiting or enlistment service of the United States,
or . . . shall willfully utter, print, write, or
publish any disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive
language about the form of government of the United
States, or the Constitution of the United States, or
the military or naval forces of the United States . .
. or shall willfully display the flag of any foreign
enemy, or shall willfully . . . urge, incite, or
advocate any curtailment of production . . . or
advocate, teach, defend, or suggest the doing of any
of the acts or things in this section enumerated and
whoever shall by word or act support or favor the
cause of any country with which the United States is
at war or by word or act oppose the cause of the
United States therein, shall be punished by a fine of
not more than $10,000 or imprisonment for not more
than twenty years, or both...

I just watched part of Hannity and Colmes. Had to turn the channel before I threw something large and heavy thru it.

Colmes was comparing what NewsWeak did with the alleged false info given W prior to the Iraqi war. He actually said "Aren't we kind of using NewsWeak as a scapegoat here?" Implying that what NewsWeak did is nothing compared to going to war with false info. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Just couldn't watch anymore, apparently Hannity is not there tonight to beat him down. I know I'd sure like to! He's using the absence of Hannity to turn the whole show into a DemonRat put down on the Repubs. It's totally disgusting!

Or unexplode a bomb.

Not that it matters, really--the Islamists would have found some other reason to riot if not for Newsweak. First Zionist death of May, Second camel discovered a virgin, Four hundred forty-second anniversary of Mohammed deflowering his first preteen bride, etc.

I can't watch H&C anymore because Colmes just makes me vomit. There should now be a public campaign to force Newsweak to reveal its source, because the ethics of anonymous sourcing is that anonymity is given in exchange for true and reliable information. This 'source' passed on his own speculation, hearsay, or fabrication, dressing it up by claiming it was in this classified report. Newsweak has no obligation to protect the anonymity of this source now, and in fact should be strongly pressured to reveal every aspect of its shoddy 'investigation' so that more impartial investigators can go at it.

The whole rationale for anonymous sourcing is that it is supposed to provide (via journalists) vital information to the public that would not otherwise be made public. We all know how badly this practice has been abused by the LSM in the past 30 years, and in this case there are good grounds to try to make an example of Newsweak.

NEWSWEAK, REVEAL THE (discredited) SOURCE!

what Newsweak does or doesn't do it irrelevant.

Have you lost your mind. With this type of philosophy I guess if someone pours gasoline on you and then I walk up and throw a match, because the gasoline was already there I have no culpability?

Irrelevant MY HORSES PATTUTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me the truth...Do you think Colin Powell?

He used to be at the Pentagon. Probably still has contacts there.

Every day I see something like this I believe the Mighty Maha el Rushie is right. We are witnessing a transition into a new historic era.

For decades a story like this would never be pulled and the public would never know it was false in the first place.

THe media is still playing their old tricks but they aren't working.

The left has been on the retreat for decades but the power shift has only recently been manifest.

I wouldn't put it past him, but if it was him that would certainly compound Newsweak's journalistic and ethical sins, because they described the source as a current "senior Pentagon official".... it would be a huge (though not surprising) ethical lapse to mis-describe the nature of their anonymous source, since they tried to give the claim added credibility by claiming the source was a current "senior Pentagon official"....

source was a current "senior Pentagon official"....

Powell could have told them it came from a senior Pentagon official. And maybe it did. I've got some thoughts about efforts made to flush out leakers but that's another day.

Newsweak would have to refer to the source as either a senior pentagon official or the ex-secretary of state just recently. Could be a way to protect Powell's identity.

Someone BIG leaked this to Newsweak.

No S__T Sherlock! That is the difference between our civilizations. Any intelligent human being knows the people over there need no reason whatsoever to turn the streets into a bloodbath. To give them a reason to attack our troops and innocent civilians is pure evil!

The fact remains any sane person knows you do not fan the flames of discontent when you are in the midst of a hostile environment. To do so in the manner NewsWeak did is not only irresponsible it is criminal.

It is incredible to me that anyone can say feeding false information to an enemy of the US is irrelevant!
