LOS ANGELES The last of the "Star Wars" movies has done what no movie in history has ever accomplished sold $50 million worth of tickets in a single day.
"Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith" grossed $50,013,859 from showings at 3,661 theaters and more than 9,000 screens around the country Thursday, including special midnight shows, according to box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations.
That beat the one-day record set in May 2004 by "Shrek 2," which sold $44.8 million on a single Saturday its fourth day in theaters.
The George Lucas film, which features the transformation of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker into the evil Darth Vader, also beat the opening day record held by "Spider-Man 2," which grossed $40.4 million when it opened on a Wednesday last June.
"Fifty million is a good opening weekend, let alone a single day," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations. "This is the box-office equivalent of a 100-year flood."
It is almost assured the film will push well past the $100 million mark for its opening weekend.
The only question is how far?
"The sky's the limit on how well this film could do," Dergarabedian said.
Especially since Darth Sidious had already talked about things being right and wrong depending on your point of view. Doesn't sound very absolutist to me.
"Heard the local talk-show guys talking about the underlying anti-Iraq anti-Bush message throughout the movie. Anyone know if there's any truth to that?"
Laughable. But then some people see the virgin Mary in oil stains.
Well, would you really trust Palpatine's view of the Sith?
Our society must be starving for something.
Didn't appear to be that way to me.
A little strong in places for kids. It is a bit dark and there is some violence.
google, of course, doesn't seem to allow images of Al Franken with the word "sucks" across his face. I could have made such an image but THAT sucks. So, here is Al Franken with the word "racist" in front of him. Which is the best I could do.
I remember hearing that on an episode of "News Radio".
Is that where it's from? I've heard it in various places!
Do they have anything other than crappy camcorder versions yet?
I've seen it twice, and I didn't pick up any of that.
Some people (you know who) are reading what they want to see into the movie, I think.
Except I guess GL didn't take the advice he offered when it came to the Anakin-Padme dialog.
Twice... and I thought I was a huge fan... planning to see for the second time tomorrow.
Are you in the picture? Great costume of the Queen.
